"It was initially reported that 15 sets were produced in total, but as more 1964 Special Mint Set coinage appears, that figure has since been revised upwards to 50."

This seems to be a coin tailor-made for a metal detector. It's hard to believe that many of these didn't get lost out of pockets over the years.

E1, those 1964 SMS/SP KENNEDY Halves are indeed quite rare. Not sure how one could track “crossovers”, however PCGS shows they’ve graded 15 and NGC shows 10. So there does appear to be roughly the 15-25 of these prized coins out in the world. Thanks Rick for the great picture and diagnostic!

In the Stack’s Bowers auction from August 15, 2019, which a SP68 realized $156K, the description relays: “One of the key diagnostic die markers is on the obverse in the form of the "Dangling 4": a small but clearly defined protrusion/defect hanging from the tip of the right crossbar in the 4 in the date. These dies appear to have been specially produced just for these coins and used nowhere else. Only one confirmed 1964 SMS half dollar lacks the "Dangling 4" marker.” Cool to read the auctions description, which I’ve linked the original SB listing below, for any curious or desiring a taste of numismatic lore? “1964 Kennedy Half Dollar. SMS. Specimen-68 (PCGS).” PS This SP68 is gorgeous with an amazingly attractive and subtle amber tone present on the reverse. Almost gives the appearance of a gilded rim.

Congrats REB, another great coin.
I was going to get on you to consider a restorative countermeasure for the coin, but I've already said my piece. Besides, this is a celebration - job well done!
Guru they have some interesting holders nowadays for those pesky little guys...

You are on the '65 hunt aren't you!? Well, there's not a whole lot out there to choose from, so I get you.
I took a look at the roll, could be some nice ones in there, very enticing. Could've been searched too, loose/torn paper & all? Cali's spidey senses might trigger on that roll lol!? Tough call bud.
The SMS 1964 - The Granddaddy! And fiercely debated as to it's true beginnings. Cool "drip" coming off of the 4, and that "square faced rim" - dig it.....
