I think they went this direction because their state quarter is along that theme. I had no idea what was being depicted on these coins. Even after I read the article I had to do more research, simply because I had never heard of this thing. That proves I am not a computer

it’s almost all in london bank vaults. yeah, sure some of it has been shipped to NY due to arbitrage and tariff fears, but the vast majority of it is still in london.

that’s why we have things like regulations and audits to check on the veracity of the firms selling the gold-backed instruments (and of course all the other securities out there). most ETF (including GLD) utilize 3rd party custodianship of assets, and since in this case the assets are unique (serial-numbered bars) that have to be published each day per regulations, you can check all the outstanding gold-backed ETFs holdings to make sure there are no duplicates (double-backing) across firms. random custodial audits conducted at least annually will spot-check that the holdings are in fact what they say they are. and of course you have the business reputation of the custodian going for you – places like chase, bofa, etc. are not going to burn their reputations by doing easily findable garbage like double-backing assets in multiple ETF or anything like that. in general it is best to avoid any investment firm products without a 3rd party custodian and external auditors.
