In reply to Craig. Craig --- I understand that most banks have access to $2 bills but you have to ask for them. I asked (read that as "demanded") that my "personal banker" at BofA get crisp 100 count BEP packs of $1, $2, and $5 bills for me a number of years ago ... and no problem but maybe a little bit of wait to get. I give them out for special occasions. On the pack of $1 bills I was very fortunate to get one with ALL bills ending in 20xx. It is one of my favorites to give out for birthdays ... and most go nucking futs to get one with their birth year on it. On the other hand, my best buddy was born on June 6, 1945. And it just so happened that my $2 set all ended in 45xx. So I gave him the $2 bill ending in 4567. And I could probably be put in jail for what I did with the one the $2 bill that ended in 4547. Probably my best use of Mint products is how I have used the $1 Innovation coins. I made special packets of the 2023 Louisiana Higgins boat one (the one depicting the Normandy Beach landings) as a special tribute to ALL veterans I see, no matter when they served. Many Vets have viewed them as the Medal they never got. (You may have to click on the attached to see the note I included with the coin.) I've seen the uncut bills on the Mint's site too. But I recommend you ask your banker to get a brand new crisp set of 100 of whatever denomination you want at face value. Don't get me wrong. You may have other special reasons for wanting them so get them from the Mint if you like. I buy a lot of the Mint's coins but I don't enjoy giving them more of your money than I have to. --- Mike

If the mint is smart, they will still include pennies in the proof and mint sets. They will sell a lot more of those sets.

As much as we are paying for proof and uncirculated sets. It would be nice to leave the cent at least on those sets in the future. Then, at least those would become a somewhat collectible.

As a professor who teaches managerial and cost accounting, I find analyses like this frustrating. We need to know what the fixed costs are of making these coins, not just the overall cost. Because the reality in manufacturing is that we allocate the fixed costs and the way that we allocate, it determines what the so called cost of making the product is. But fixed costs oftentimes are not avoidable, and if we stop making the pennies, the fixed costs that are applied to the pennies would be applied to every other coin. So what you’re looking at here is not exactly what it costs to make a penny. However, I have yet to see a breakdown between the variable and fix costs of making that coin.
