I will admit that taste will change over time as we age. Specifically, we become more sentimental about the antiquities that best represent our earliest experiences. Additionally, as conservators, we like to see them in the highest state of preservation possible and this is a personal subliminal reflection upon us as aesthetic collectors.

As for my comment “butt ugly nasty ole coins”….I should have been more specific, more respectful, and said “butt ugly nasty old damaged FU coins that no one wants.” However, you are right, there are some coins that are so old and so rare that any state of preservation is a thing of absolute beauty and amazement. So, the term “Beautiful” is subjective and must always be put in its proper frame.

Great retort Major D. As we progress to an advanced society, it will become necessary to think artistically and scientifically. When we as an individual are able to use both sides of our brain, the art brain and the science brain that is, we become more effective. That is why I enjoy Numismatics so much. It is the Art and Science combined that drives me.
