I can agree with that assessment Major D, no pushback here.
We are pursuing those “collectables” that make us feel happy, satisfied, or even challenged, regardless of the definition or nickname that they’ve been given. “To each his own” said many-a-wise men here!

A collection of well considered ideas Kaiser and Major D. In addition I wonder about the very concept of making new collectibles, whether metal rounds by private or public mints, ceramic figurines or bean filled dolls. Can something that was never intended to be used have a lasting value? Part of collecting is a personal connection between the collector and the object of desire, but part is knowing there are others that want the object too and are willing to pay for it. Suffering from FOF (fear of frenzies), I’m resigned to watching much of the modern world with astonishment.

Completely agree. But haven’t many “collectible” (uncirculated/proof) coins been separated from circulation for decades? I suppose some ripped open their sets back in the day to buy candy with the change but most left them encased in their holders/packages. I will freely admit that more coins produced now have absolutely no connection to circulation but as long as I’ve been alive, now over six decades, there have been “special” coins that were valued considerably over what their face value reflected.

I wonder if OGP condition would be tricky for the auction company – a pig-in-a-poke kind of uncertainty that they’re not fond of. I’m a little surprised that the Mint didn’t cull the 45 69PFs and just auction 230 PF70s.

Oh I think this is just the start for mint rarities going to the auction block. If they can generate $8.2M in a couple hours of auctioning, why in the world would they end it there? One thing I know from experience is government entities love money. I, for one, hope to see more coins going to auction, but I hope they go in OGP condition.

Wow, indeed. But the history major in me always wonders what it would be like to hold and possess a coin like that.

The four coins I now have my eyes on are the first and last half eagles from Dahlonega and Charlotte (1838-D, 1838-C, 1861-D, and 1861-C). A few years ago, I visited the old Dahlonega courthouse, where the mint museum is located. They had a complete set of the mint’s gold coins. The building was constructed with local bricks embedded with flecks of gold. In the afternoon sunlight, the building twinkled. The whole experience was mind-blowing.

It’s a 1795 silver Dollar (below), but you get the idea..

The modern replicas will no doubt boost the classics, just as the classics have boosted the moderns imo.

Maybe. A friend of mine priced out a 1794 FH Dollar for me. I was tempted … for a minute.
