Chuck great info, I remember the destroyed spouse coins story. I carried the conversation over to the new article earlier today. It was not intentional to step on your toes. I have followed the Spouses back in the day, so I spoke about what limited info that I have ‘upstairs’..

One last thing.
According to the Coin World11/18/2019 article the Mint’s more than $1million worth of coins was compensated
“for the lost claim totaling $1,015,941.87.”
Wonder what we would have/had to paid for these coins? Likely, our premium charges would have been much higher than the premium (if there was one) charged on the claim.

“Coin World” has had several articles on the “spouses” in recent years. One that has a lot of information is the Coin World .com November 2020 issue which breaks out mintages by proof and unc.
However, this information likely will be misleading. Why because many were likely melted especially the early year ones (and Madison).
A Coin World article in their November 18, 2019 weekly cites, in part, the mint’s former fulfillment contractor: “mistakenly arranged for the incineration, without metal reclamation, of more than $1million worth of First Spouse gold $10 coins.” These were Dolley Madison per the article.
Starting with Ida McKinley the combined totals for Proof and unc have been under 5,000 for all those subsequent to her EXCEPT FOR JACQUELINE KENNEDY (17993) and NANCY REAGAN (5557).
Back to the old days when thousands of silver dollars melted and others at different times too.

Thanks for the info. I guess the red book would break it down by proof/uncirculated. Anecdotally, the Bush coin seemed pretty low to me. I’m surprised Eleanor Roosevelt would be the lowest mintage. She was frequently like a co-president with possibly the highest profile of any first lady. Grace Coolidge – perfectly understandable that the mintage would be low.

Thanks for the info. I didn’t realize that the Prez had to predecease the spouse. I had thought the Bush total was low. Time for Major D to post mintages of the series. I agree with you, chuck, I’d like to see the program continue indefinitely.

Several 1st spouse coins were unique, a Gold Seated Liberty coin, flowing hair, etc. and the price for many was about $490. Loaded up on Jackie’s, none since but missed Eleanor R, she was the price queen, wonder if still true, need a Hrey sheet…..I sell silver many x, gold I don’t like to sell, always been a mistake

When I first started collecting coins silver was about $0.92 an ounce (silver $ a dollar) and gold $35 an ounce (double eagle about $50). If I only had the smarts and $ back in those days.
Agree silver is not 80 times more plentiful than gold. Call it supply and demand and/or pumping and dumping one for the other.
My mentors always said be careful for what you wish for you might just get it and learn that it was not what you wanted after all.

Believe the President must expire/die too before the expired spouse is honored with the coin. Jimmy is still hanging in with us. Think the series will continue unless we no longer have a President. Can not see it ending because politics likely would not allow that
Not sure what you mean about “Bush terrible mintage”. The mintages were higher than for some others even thou price much higher at mint for Bush.
Someday in the future it will be interesting to see how many coins are minted for current day survivors. After all we might like some more and some less and would buy or not buy on that basis as well as the future price..
Personally would prefer the program to be a never ending series.
