Precious metals split Thursday with prices rising for gold and silver and falling for platinum and palladium. Their changes were modest, except for palladium which dropped 2.6%.

Gold for June delivery rose $6.90, or 0.4%, to close at $1,875.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Gold prices are posting modest gains in midday U.S. trading Thursday but the bulls are fading fast after solid early gains have been erased. The precious metals markets are being buffeted today by strong gains in the U.S. dollar index and a big spike up in U.S. Treasury yields," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Inc, said in a daily research note.

Gold traded between $1,872.30 and $1,910.70. They dipped 0.1% on Wednesday, they rose 0.4% on Tuesday, and they fell 2.5% on Monday for their lowest settlement since Feb. 15.

Silver for July delivery added 4.1 cents, or 0.2%, to end at $22.443 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $22.32 to $23.35. They declined 1.2% on Wednesday — for their lowest settlement since Feb. 3, they climbed 0.4% on Tuesday, and they dropped 2.2% on Monday.

In other precious metals prices on Thursday:

  • July platinum lost $6.20, or 0.6%, to $973.40 an ounce, trading between $960.20 and $993.10.
