The United States Mint last week started selling 2022 National Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Coins and 2022 Rhode Island American Innovation dollars. A total of 11 products with the coins went on sale. Each was among the U.S. Mint’s top weekly sellers.
Released Wednesday, Feb. 23, the Rhode Island $1 coin features a design recognizing naval architect Nathanael Herreshoff’s famous Reliance yacht. The issue is the first of four for 2022 from the U.S. Mint’s multi-year American Innovation® $1 Coin Program which was introduced in 2018.
Rolls and bags of the dollar posted five-day opening sales of a combined 899,800 coins, for the second best start in the product series to date. (The 2019 New Jersey dollar depicting a light bulb ranks first with a combined 991,200 coins sold in four days.)
Here’s a summary of last year’s Innovation dollars and how each started:

the first 2021 dollar, emblematic of Ralph Baer’s invention of the first home video game console and representing New Hampshire, opened with six-day sales of 785,700 coins,

the second 2021 dollar, depicting Virginia’s Chesapeake Bay Bridge-Tunnel, logged six-day sales of 753,125 coins,
-
the third 2021 dollar, emblematic New York’s Erie Canal, registered six-day sales of 836,175 coins, and
-
the fourth 2021 dollar, depicting the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, started with six-day sales of 818,050 coins.
Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Coins Debut
Pre-ordering opened Thursday, Feb. 24, for seven Purple Heart products celebrating the National Purple Heart Hall of Honor, which was established to honor the sacrifice of America’s service members who were killed or wounded in action.
The proof silver dollar led the Mint’s weekly sales with orders totaling 19,644. The proof half dollar claimed second place at 10,360.
Introductory pricing for the Purple Heart Hall of Honor Commemorative Coins ends March 24 at 3:00 pm ET. The coins themselves are not expected to ship until June 8.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 208 numismatic products. Sixty-eight outperformed their prior weekly gains compared to 42 previously. Not counting the newest products to compare apples to apples, no product increased by more than 1,000 units just like in the prior report.
In addition, 25 products registered lower sales against 18 in previous sales report. The reductions ranged from 1 to 1,411. Products with large declines include the recently released 2022 Native American Dollars, marking losses from 421 to 1,411, and the James Knox Polk Presidential Silver Medal which lost 1,270.

I agree with your assessment, Major, on both the PH and NLB being available until the end of the year, with the exceptions of course being the NLB Privy Proof Silver Dollar and the PH Colorized Silver Dollar
Sir Kaiser, how interesting of you to attach the image of the 1990 Commemorative Eisenhower Silver Dollar. This is the only U.S. coin to feature two portraits of the same person on the same side of one coin. It is also the first Commemorative coin I ever purchased at the United States Mint Coin Store in Washington, DC, while visiting the Smithsonian American Art Museum. The obverse was designed by John Mercanti which shows Eisenhower as a president superimposed on Eisenhower the general.

Colorized coins from the mint. What’s next gold plated proof quarters? It sounds to me like our favorite coin hawker (Mike ‘Mr. Wonderful’ Mezack) has influenced the mint to a much greater extent than anyone would have thought possible. Also, is anyone here buying the PH clad half dollar coin for $33.00? They must have given the mint employees one hell of a pay/benefits hike!
Other mints around the world have colored coins and they’re big sellers. U.S. Mint just following that trend from the likes of Royal Mint, Royal Canadian Mint, Perth Mint, Monnaie de Paris, and many others.
Some of the nicer colored ones do some kick a$$ obsidian colored coins too.

I’m quite aware that other mints sell colorized coins. To me, colorized coins=junk. That’s just my opinion and the reason I don’t pay good money for them. When I buy gold, silver, or palladium coins, I don’t want some colorized sticker or siicone pad added to them. But if they float your boat, buy all you want.
Not condescending on your opinion Larry T just stating the fact that’s what world’s mints and now US Mint doing now. Colored coins a fad that seems to have stuck. Not a big fan myself except for some nice AC/DC, Iron Maiden coins I have seen and wish to get for gifts to friends. However, the colored basketball coin did look nice and subtle with only hoop rim colored orange. Didn’t purchase though. I seem to remember my Mom telling me “if everyone jumped off a cliff, does that mean you have to?” Because all of the mints are producing colorized coins, does that mean we all have to buy them? I don’t have any problem with people buying them if that’s what they like in a coin, variety is the spice of life after all.I’m just not interested in them. By the way, I’ve always been a fan of AC/DC. Their ‘Let There Be Rock’ dvd, with Bon Scott, is one of my favorite!

Chris, maybe because the process used is called colorization. According to the U.S. Mint, “Coins are colorized by methods such as applying a “sticker” to the surface, adding ink or paint through a computerized “printing” process, or enameling by filling recessed areas with paint. The U.S. Mint used a third-party to colorize the Basketball commemorative coins using an automated process. All previously offered Proof Platinum American Eagles had an initial HOL of 1, like last year’s 2021 First Amendment to the United States Constitution Platinum Proof Coin — Freedom of Religion (mintage limited to 15,000 with an initial household order limit of 1 coin). I guess the Mint didn’t want to put a limit on Free Speech this year (pun intended). To Kaiser, Rich, and all my other admired friends on this site — Maybe I’m missing something but I think the “none” in household limit meant that you could order as many as you want. While actually getting them may be something else, with all respect I think you may have mis-read this one. Look at the the “2022 American Innovation $1 Coins”. Mike and Major D, I believe the point of Sir Kaiser’s original comment on this subject, is that out of fairness to all concerned, for special limited (quantity) numismatic releases like the Gold Proof/Uncirculated/High Relief, Platinum Proof, Palladium Proof/Uncirculated, Commemorative coins, and Silver Medals like the 2.5 oz Navy Meda, etc., the standard operating procedure should be to have an intial Household Order Limit of 1 coin in effect for the first 24 hours of sales, and this HOL should be always be adhered to. Major, it is not unusual for the price to have been listed as TBD yesterday (Tuesday) with the release set for Thursday because the pricing for this platinum proof is based on the Mint pricing grid price range for platinum which is calculated based on the prior week (Wednesday thru Tuesday) 5-day average closing prices. So since yesterday was Tuesday, the mint had to wait for Tuesday’s closing price before it could calculate the 5-day average price for lookup on the grid pricing table.
