Meanwhile, gold for February delivery rose $2.10 to settle at $1,810.90 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

“The ongoing trend (for gold) remains sideways to higher in the near term, and we believe that this trend is coming from the continuation of the inflationary pressures that we see building in the market," Reuters quoted David Meger, director of metals trading at High Ridge Futures.

Gold futures traded between $1,809.40 and $1,821.60. They dipped 0.2% on Monday.

Silver for March delivery gained 13.2 cents, or 0.6%, to close at $23.121 an ounce. The settlement was the highest since Nov. 24 when silver ended at $23.496 an ounce. Silver prices ranged from a low of $23 to a high of $23.48. They edged 0.2% higher on Monday.
