US Mint Sales: 2021 Morgan Dollars Retreat Sharply

60

The latest United States Mint sales figures show some sharp drops for 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars. The privy-marked dollars led declines with the ‘CC’ falling 4,796 to 165,293 and the ‘O’ down 4,792 to 165,491. Each has a product limit of 175,000.

The pair of coins were the earliest released among the centennial issues, launching May 24, and most susceptible to problems resulting from orders with credit cards that had expired or changed delivery addresses as no Morgan dollars actually started shipping until mid-October.

In those cases and for other reasons, the Mint sent emails to customers saying:

"Thank you for your interest in our Morgan/Peace Campaign. Unfortunately, we are not able to fulfill your order at this time due to issues with your method of payment. Please call our Customer Service Center to resolve the issue within 48 hours of the date of this email at 1-800-872-6468.

We apologize for any inconvenience this may cause. If we do not hear from you within 48 hours, we will automatically cancel your order."

During certain periods this year, it was virtually impossible to actually reach a customer service representative by telephone. Some of the ‘CC’ and ‘O’ sales reductions likely resulted from customers who gave up on trying to get their original orders fulfilled.

Both Morgan Privy Mark Silver Dollars took ten times the lickin’ each of what the other Morgans did this past week and unlike the Timex watches of lore it doesn’t appear they’re going to keep on tickin’; on the contrary, these anniversary dollars currently seem to be dead in the water. Losing almost five thousand units in sales each in a single week doesn’t bode well for the future value of these Privy Mark Morgans. The Mint is in its usual smoke and mirrors manner trying to attribute the massive declines in sales figures to expired credit card numbers and… Read more »

The sales numbers declining on the “O” and “CC” privy mark coins really is probably mostly due to the reason that the Mint has given. It is certainly believable that the sales numbers are dropping not from cancelled orders but from the credit cards failing for one reason or another. They reason I say this is because currently the most expensive coin on ebay is the “CC” privy mark coin. People wouldn’t cancel orders for the most profitable coin! I’m rightly mad at the way the Mint handles things but they are likely being truthful about the charges not being… Read more »

Rodney Moore,

If my suppositions about the Mint derailing the sale of these coins one way or another having nothing to do with failed credit card charges are totally off the mark I’ll be the first to admit my error, so I definitely appreciate your comment regarding your personal experiences with this particular situation.

You’ve also given me a whole new awareness of how close to the bone all too many folks cut their cards’ available credit margins; I had no idea people are willing to live that “dangerously” on such a regular basis. That would make me nervous.

I won’t get into my financial holdings but I’m far from living dangerously. It seems like that when someone has a differing opinion you want to throw insults. You don’t have things figured out as much as you think and would have others believe.

Jeff Legan

Hello Rodney Moore, I don’t think Kaiser Wilhelm was meaning to (or did) throw insults. I would say unintentional insensitivity or ignorance, but neither of those are at the level of insults. Insults often lead to offense. Being offended easily leads to conflict. Insensitive or ignorant comments/actions all too often leads to an offensive reaction in someone when they should only lead to an education, perhaps for all sides. I would not have replied to you at all if you would have left your last sentence out, which I think you did mean to be an insult but was just… Read more »

Fviia and Rich, Thank you for commenting, because it makes me think you took the time to read my post. I hope it made you think. If anyone is interested I saw an article today (Nov. 30th) on a website (mediapost.com) somewhat related to this subject. It is titled “The Complexities Of Understanding Each Other by Gord Hotchkiss “. The site is for professionals in the digital advertising industry. I am not that, but I did own a stock in that industry for 7 years which made me think it would be a good idea to keep tabs on what the professionals… Read more »

Lucky to us who are real collectors and want these Morgans in our collections. As long as they don’t drop below the price we bought them for, lower mintages may be good for us in the long term.

Rich

Holy Graf Zeppelin! … These stunning sales reductions for the Privy Morgan Dollars are incredible, especially in light of the continuous, smaller steady weekly drops preceding this wipeout. The Mint had stated that 12,900 of the orders for Morgan and Peace dollars have been held up for delivery until the Mint determines if the orders are legitimate or are fraudulent attempts. Additionally, the Mint required another 15,000 customers to call the order fulfillment center when problems arose with expired credit cards or changed delivery addresses after orders were placed. So here are some of the results arising from a pre-sale… Read more »

Run, Dynamic Duo, run from the obfuscations, prevarications and manipulations of the Mint just as fast as you super-humanly can! After all, the Treasury Department’s Office of the Inspector General will only be able to maintain a hands off position so much longer with this kind of malarkey taking place before it absolutely has to intervene. I wonder what revelations next week’s Mint Sales Report will deliver. In fact, I wouldn’t be surprised if we are presented with a repeat of this week’s stellar performance, or perhaps one even worse. After all, the “problem order count” in regard to the… Read more »

Well gee…..maybe its because i just received an email stating they are refunding my damn 2 coins because its stuck in between preshipment info sent to usps awaiting item and them showing shipped. Such ineptitide on the mint with this release. I wonder how many of us are getting screwed with this…. Im getting a refund….. So i will have to pay more on open market now….. The mint really screwed me over. …. Can you tell my blood pressure has risen over this! ARGH.

Kaiser Wilhelm

If the Mint knows were the shipment logjam is, Domenic, what exactly is keeping them from unjamming it? That story smells like an agitated skunk; I for one am not buying it.

4mujma.jpg
Rick

Same exact scenario here. I dedicated time to sit and jump on this. I dedicated time to each morgan/peace dollar release after this. Now I have 4 of the 6. Having received the exact same email as you, my collection is incomplete after receiving a confirmation email that my order was successful. Huge waste of time and effort.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Rick,

It might not be all that imperative for you to think of your collection as being “incomplete” simply because you weren’t able to secure two of the six Morgan Silver Dollars that were released as one hundredth anniversary products this year, especially considering that those particular two are representative privy coins of which the mints they are so to speak dedicated to no longer even exist. Just sayin’.

With all due respect STOP THE DAMN WHINING AND TELL THE POST OFFICE TO PUT A TRACE ON IT = PROBLEM WILL SOLVE ITSELF

11-25-2021_003.jpg
Rodney Moore

If the USPS records show that the info was sent but they haven’t received the package yet then the USPS can’t do anything to “trace” it. They can’t search in their system for something that they are yet to receive and asking them to trace it isn’t going to solve the problem. If the mint had actually tendered the package then there likely would be at least some subsequent scans if the package moved onwards any at all. It is very likely that the mint didn’t actually hand the package over. The mint sends “shipped” notices sometimes days in advance… Read more »

Rodney Moore,

You have hit the nail right on the head here with your exceptionally accurate, informative and on point comment. Thank you for your timely and thoughtful help in clearing that situation up by making the actual scenario for how that process is intended to operate as plain as day.

Far too much confusion has resulted here due to some serious lapses in the understanding of how the interactions among the shipper, the carrier and the consignee should work. A large part of that has now been made very clear here by you, Rodney, in every detail.

Its a catch 22 essentially

John D

I am in the same boat with the CC and O privy mark coins. I was wondering when this issue in shipping would start to be talked about. The Mint has told me I needed to wait four weeks before starting their refund process. I suspect many people who have not received their coins are now getting refunds, and that is why we are seeing so many “returns”, in spite of what this article says. The real question is what happened to all these coins? I see from the comments many of you have the same order status as me… Read more »

Kaiser Wilhelm

Just as an afterthought, Domenic, you don’t necessarily have to pay more for those coins on the secondary market, a place, by the way, the re-sellers have been trying to steer you toward all along. You could hold off on buying those coins until the flippers get desperate enough to sell them at the original Mint price (or less) when they realize they won’t be able to unload them any other way.

kramer.png
Chris Terp

So maybe a chance for me to purchase a Morgan CC?! Had mine taken out of my shopping cart while trying to purchase earlier this year.

Activated the “remind me” immediately after that sellout and go back every so often to activate again but have never been notified of coin availability.

Happy Thanksgiving All – gobble gobble.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Thank you, and Happy Thanksgiving to you also, Chris!

You’ve just brought up yet another aspect of this rather strange progression of events regarding the misadventures of the Morgan Privy Mark Silver Dollars, which is “Where are all the cancelled and/or returned coins going?”. Apparently only the Shadow knows.

8qqzwnf6mxq21.jpg
Jay Miller

I seriously doubt the mint tried to reach out to anyone!!! I notified the mint immediately when my order for the CC and O varieties were shutdown as my credit card was being verified. I received an excuse letter, later changed to other excuses, BUT never a notification that I could buy these coins.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Jay Miller,

Good for you for bringing up this very point. Despite all this talk by the Mint about the multiple specious reasons and assorted transparent excuses as to why various customers missed out either on putting in successful orders or ever receiving the coins they did manage to order, the bottom line seems to be that orders were nullified, coins were not delivered, and there were no opportunities offered for an additional chance to get any.

Hey Jay – Kaiser it’s all about the effort, I have an 11 year old computer with windows vista running extra slow and low on memory but I got everyone of the coins I wanted because I put in the effort. If you bookmark the coins on your favorites bar and check back daily or half as much as you post and whine on this blog you would get a coin – there are people getting these coins everyday and it’s because they put in the effort. This is not the only coin blog – network a little bit –… Read more »

Could not have said it better. Thank you

Senza.

I concur with you exactly, my wife and I both put in and received all coins. It took time and patients but it paid off in the log run.
Were there problems of course, after all it’s the Mint we’re dealing with here. I’ve been reading for months now from all who had or still having problems getting their coins, for that I can sympathize but after 40 years of orders from the Mint I’ve learned a thing or two along this very annoying journey.

Antonio

That’s why I tried one more time to order my one set of reverse proof ASEs and got my order through on November 4th. I received my beautiful coins on November 12th. Go figure!

Nice to see all you “WHINING” “OLD LADIES” are Baaaaaaack !!!!!

sam Tweedy is bbback!!! As our little yellow canary in a coal mine, thanks for warning us, by your growing distress, that the levels of toxic gases emanating from our comments were rising too high.

Rich,

I wonder if you too measure sam’s state of mind by how many exclamation points he chooses to utilize at any given time. Five is likely approaching Condition Red.

Kaiser Wilhelm

There is, after all, precedent for this…

Where else would we old ladies go, sam? Our knitting circle and our bingo club only meet once a week, so when we’re not gumming our baby food we have to do something.

Morgan Silver Dollars Retreat, well anyone else miss out? I missed out on the “P” mint Morgan and the Peace Dollar. Well I put in email and on phone to notify me if they became available. But no notification that they were available for purchase. So what gives?

Kaiser Wilhelm

Matt,

Did you go to the Mint’s webpages for those coins and ask for a reminder that way?

Kaiser —
This note has nothing to do with the one I am replying to you on. But given the fact I don’t have your personal eMail address but I’m hoping you may have some sort of auto-reminder on those that reply to your notes…. So I’m posting it here for the WOLVES.

I just discovered that the 2021 ASE Type 2 Uncirculated Dollar 21EGN is now available for purchase.

So jump on it my friends !!! FOOD FIGHT.

Good catch, Mike. I just checked the Mint page and as of 8:15pm ET time there were still 1,387 coins avaiable for purchase (i.e., data-available="1387.0").
Kaiser Wilhelm

Rich,

This “high-tech” stuff is quite a stretch beyond the ken of an old fashioned flip-phone (with text-blocking yet) user like me…

Kaiser — I knew there was some hidden reason why I like you. And I finally discovered it re your Flip Phone. Guess what? Me too. Literally ALL of my friends don’t understand why a Rocket Scientist (yes, I actually am one by formal training) like me would prefer a Flip Phone over a “smart phone”. So how “smart” is having to buy a new smart phone every year or two … or having cracked more of their screens … or paying obnoxious monthly data charges … or using them more as a camera than what it was originally intended,… Read more »

Mike, I liked you already anyway, but your kind words give me yet more reason. Honestly, I’ve never encountered a site before that had so many positive, interesting and above all likeable people on it as this one; I actually feel comfortable and safe here, which as we all know is not all that often the case with online interaction. It’s interesting that you are so adept at the physical sciences yet like me you have no predilection for advanced gadgetry. In that regard, beyond my phone, my television is early generation flat screen and my simple little Yaris has… Read more »

Rich —
Many Thanks to you and Kaiser for the kind words. I would rather be lucky than good. And this catch was one of my strokes of luck.

On the other hand HOW and WHERE did you find the obscure Mint page that showed exactly how many were still available?

Sounds like you are the good one that balances the scale on me being lucky.
— Mike

Rich

Mike, you’re welcome. To answer your question of HOW and WHERE, here is a re-, re-posting of the instructions originally provided by Daniel (my brother) verbatim from one of his earlier posts:
“Right click the product page and click “view source code” or whatever your browser says along those lines. Then CTRL +F and type in “data-available” (without quotes) and the number to the right of it is the quantity remaining.”

Nothing quite like giving someone who was qualified to analyze the stresses on the B-1 swing wing supersonic bomber a taste of humility ….

Neat trick. But when I did it a few moments ago it gave me a “0.0” in that field. Whoops! Sneaky computer. I just did it again and it yielded 1134. !!! (12:13PM Pacific Time 11/28) Wow. Like I said, Neat Trick !!

But in all due respect I said I could “analyze” the engineering problem … not actually build the bomber.

Thanks for sharing this gem.

Kaiser Wilhelm

And here, Mike, I was going to ask you if you could possibly whip one of those B-1 beauties up for me in time for the Holidays so that just this once I would have something truly unique to gift my brother-in-law with, the man who has everything, for Christmas. Oh well, I suppose a duplicate of last year’s present, another vintage British Bofors Gun, will have to do; at least this way he can invite a friend to go migratory geese hunting with him from the comfort and privacy of his back yard.

Hello Kaiser Wilhelm,
You might have already heard of this company because they appear on Pawn Stars, but I have found International Military Antiques (IMA) has an interesting website with items from many nations at all price ranges. I do not think they have any British Bofors Gun’s for sale but I did just see a 19th century 9 pounder ship’s cannon for sale at the bargain price (haha) of just under $15000.

Kaiser Wilhelm

Thanks, Jeff, it’s always good to be aware of another reliable source what with all the logistics problems hampering the size of inventories and the speed of deliveries these days. The problem I see here is that while the Bofors affords the ease of bringing down a whole flock of migratory birds with a single airburst, the use of an old naval gun will likely result in some unfortunate family’s dinner table conversation being interrupted by a 9 pound ball of iron thumping into their gravy dish. What a mess that would leave and how rude that would be, especially… Read more »

This is the second or third time I’ve copied the instructions. Hopefully this time I will remember where I put my notes.

Says 0.0 for all privy marked coins. I’m hoping for some more Peace dollars though. I really like mine and wished I’d ordered the limit. Otherwise I’m happy. 🙂

Lucky is good. Good is good. Good and lucky is especially good. 🙂

Amen to that, Antonio!
