Precious metals declined on Thursday, logging losses ranging from 0.5% for gold to 2.2% for palladium. Gold’s retreat was its third in four sessions, but follows the more than five-month settlement high reached on Wednesday.

Gold for December delivery shed $8.80 to settle at $1,861.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"At the moment, it’s difficult for gold to find direction because of the uncertainty related to the dollar’s performance, and the likely response of the Fed and other central banks to inflation," Reuters quoted ActivTrades senior analyst Ricardo Evangelista.

Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,856.60 to a high of $1,873.30. They tacked on 0.9% on Wednesday, for their best close since June 11, they fell 0.7% on Tuesday, and they dipped 0.1% on Monday.
