Early U.S. Mint sales stats are available for the pair of holiday-themed ornaments released last week. The Mint’s wreath-like 2021 Ornament posted sales of 2,869 while its kid-focused 2021 Mighty Minters™ Ornament registered sales of 2,283. Both were among the list of the U.S. Mint’s top weekly sellers.
Elsewhere, the various 2021-dated Morgan and Peace Silver dollars logged — and what has become routine — another round of weekly declines. Their latest reductions ranged from 210 to 252.
The figures going forward will perhaps be more interesting as collectors are now actually starting to receive their dollars.

- 2021 Birth Set (+409 to 26,271)
- 2020 American Innovation Dollar Proof Set (+334 to 98,321)
- 2018-W $10 American Liberty Gold Coin (+316 to 44,322)
In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 318 numismatic products. Thirty-nine of them outperformed their prior weekly gains compared to 61 previously. Not counting the new products to compare apples to apples, 4 increased by more than 1,000 units against 5 in the prior report.
Including the already mentioned silver dollars, a combined 25 products saw their sales reduced compared to 24 previously. The reductions ranged from 1 to 1,264 units with the latter tagged to ‘P’ rolls of North Carolina Innovation dollars. All of the other roll and bag products with North Carolina dollar also fell.

I hear ya. The last couple of years, and especially this year, I’ve been going against my better senses with my collection. I’ve been on a “mission” to fill out my (rev) proof ASE (and AGE) collection, and a big push to get just about every individually encapsulated coin graded. Well, I got my morgan and peace dollar ship notice from the mint today. I only wanted the one of each, and I didn’t even bother trying to get the other ones. The problem with the flippers is that it seems that much of the demand is from just the flippers themselves, not from actual purchasers. I won’t go onto ebay and pay double what the mint charges (which is already double what they should charge), the flippers can keep them at those prices.. alas I wish it were the case that flippers are dying off, in reality they just probably will go find something else to flip (limited-release vinyl, baseball cards, etc.). probably they gravitated to the mint because at least a few years ago the prices were relatively low and it was easy to ‘game’ the mint’s website, thus there was a lot of headroom to scoop up large quantities and upcharge on ebay (or infomercials), at least as long as people keep buying stuff there. yes, exactly that is correct. this is also the reason why I don’t buy multiples of everything each year the mint puts out – just whatever piques my interest, provided the price is acceptable. I get from the mint directly because then I’m assured of getting the real deal, which is not exactly a guarantee on ebay and other places online these days. of course I’m looking to see what there is in value in the coin and (usually) won’t get something that is a terrible value, but I’m not overly concerned about the price going up or down after… Read more »
I need advice. Being new to purchasing from the U.S. mint, it has not been a pleasant experience overall although as a pure collector I am thrilled to have what I have ordered to date. I ordered 14 coins total and have 8 in my possession so far and 6 more are on their way. 7 of those I already received are absolutely beautiful and problem free and then there is this 2021S. the mint doesn’t promise to give everyone perfect 70-grade coins, though many are. that’s part of the mystery and luck with ordering from the mint directly. unless a coin or its packaging is truly defective (not being a 70-grade quality coin is not considered defective), you will have to pay for the return shipping and are basically just taking another random draw hoping to get a better one, the replacement could very wind up being even worse. note it is the mint, not you, who gets to decide whether something is ‘defective’ or not.

Scratches on a Proof coin is unacceptable, but these silver dollars are just uncirculated finish/strike & can have some scratches without being considered defective by the Mint.

Thank you. I do find it significant and unacceptable and think I will take my chances and try to return it for an exchange as I can’t imagine how getting a replacement could be much worse. I too thought this defect crosses the line between a minor defect and a major defect. Just hoping whoever makes that decision at the mint is in a good mood and agrees.
yeah, I originally had a bunch of extra words about what constitutes ‘defective’ as it varies based on the product, but I ripped it all out because it’s really just a guess on what it should be, in reality the mint decides anyway, and who really knows except them what their criteria is. it should be different based on the product finish but it could also be different due to the mood of the guy processing your return.
Thankyou for that feedback. At first I was hoping the defect was on the capsule so I removed the coin from it only to realize the rather severe scratch was unfortunately on the bust. The eyes are immediately drawn to it, a major detraction, and that is all I see now. Extremely unattractive and I am very disappointed with it and the mint. It almost looks like a messed up “P” harryg. Can’t enlarge more on my computer to get a good look at it but if you are seeing it as a blotch rather than a miss strike or strike error (which makes the coin more valuable) then I will take your word it’s a blotch. This coin is sold out so a return may not be able to get you exchange unless other folks return their coins. Those other returns also may have blotches as bad as yours, or maybe not as bad. All I have to add to the other great advice is – werent these sold out? Do they even HAVE a replacement? I know (as Kaiser points out) many are being returned. The “why” of that – and are those available, is cause for concern for me.

After reading everybody’s advice, I have reconsidered and decided I will just keep it. I looked at it again under high magnification and it is just a nasty nick although in my photo I can see where it could be misconstrued as a P. I cant imagine what caused it but I am not confident I can get any replacement at all and even if I could, not confident It would be any better. I Hope my Morgan P’s and Peace Dollars which are on their way are problem free. Thanks to all.
Been reading lot of unsatisfied buyers here about quality with these coins. So now I too am hoping my Peace Silver Dollars come to me free of scratches. So glad that my Morgan O came in Scot-free of blemishes. It’s one of the best quality coins I have received from US Mint. I must of gotten one of the early strikes on the die. The Morgan D, S and Philadelphia and Peace coins are in transit. I use USPS tracking and the curious thing is that the D and S were shipped from Memphis but the other 2 were shipped from Irving Texas. Maybe since the call center is Dallas they have contracted help in Texas. Has anyone else noticed this with the shipping of their orders?
Yep, noted and greatly appreciated! My location is suburban Washington, D.C. in Maryland. When items come from Memphis facility they go through Philadelphia USPS facility which means significant delays in delivery for me. When I noticed Irving, Texas was wondering how long parcel would be in USPS system and to my surprise not long. Will enjoy more Mint items shipped from Irving to keep parcels out of Philadelphia postal mess but this may be done only to help take load off Memphis facility(?). I live 30 miles from the Fulfillment center in Memphis Tennessee and use the USPS informed delivery system. When I get a package from the mint it comes to Memphis and half the time it goes to Nashville and then comes back to Memphis. This has made no sense to me but that’s what the tracking indicates which also increases about 3 days on the delivery. My last two deliveries from the mint were sent by UPS and from the time it shipped from the mint to my house was three days. Go figure.
Memphis is a fulfilment center and gets dropped off/sent over to the USPS Regional Origin Facility Memphis TN Distribution Center Annex. This may mean parcel goes across the street in a Postal Hub compound and probably just out of convenience and speed to clear things out of the Hub area, goes to the next major postal facility in Nashville where they have the room and time to then correctly distribute(?). Seriously, 30 miles from the FC and it is sent 230 mile x2 and then the 30 miles to my mailbox. If this system of delivery makes sense to you-Hey Houston we have a problem.
It doesn’t make sense to me JWP but in the sense of time efficiency for processing it probably makes sense to the Post Office.
Guess it is similar thinking with express overnight delivery by Post Office where all packages go to Indianapolis as it’s central location for US for USPS to ensure that overnight delivery can happen for the majority of its deliveries.
There’s a right way, a wrong way and the USPS way.
Kaiser, Damn, are you saying I paid too much for the Advance Release MS70 Morgan/Peace Dollar set from Mike ‘ every ASE collector has to have this set in their collection’ Mezazck? Oh well, I suppose I can always send it back. If the Mint produced a maximum 100K for all the Morgan/Peace Dollars then I could see the justification of those secondary market prices. HSN-Mike (yeah, him) has stated that some of the Morgans are not grading well due to spotting on the dies (or blanks?). (Thats despite the fact he also said a week or so ago that they might not even ship out this year, when folks here were reporting shipping notices already. “Exclusive to him” – better get yours. hrrumph.) Kaiser, those look nice. If I want the identification the coins are from the Ltd Ed set when graded from PCGS, I (think) have to send it in the sealed outer box. I dont think its in another box within this one. And this time, I kinda do want that designation when graded … its free, and its just a different coin number, but … its a fact in this case. Kaiser – very nice looking. And all the coins too! When I opened mine it was missing the Crossing the Delaware Quarter. Called customer service and they told me I could return it for a refund nor could they guarantee I could get another set. So I emailed and wrote them, with pictures and the CNR form, asking them to either send me the individual coin or the 2021 Silver Proof set free of charge. I have received now my 3 CC, 3 O and 3 S Morgans with the others supposedly in the mail. 2 of the 3 CC have ‘spots’ on them that are actually the same on each coin, exact same – so must be oil on the die or planchettes, who knows… Then there is the 2 of 3 O that have a ‘ding’ below the E in America on the reverse. One more comment – I am one that is overall disappointed in the coins. The surface is very similar to the newer ‘burnished’ ASEs and NOT at all like the original or even the 1921 Morgans…. no real ‘cartwheel’ or ‘luster’ that we know and love so much on the originals…. why didn’t the mint go for an original finish???? To me, these look more like commemoratives (and no, they are not commemoratives) and less like the real thing…. so, at one point I had intended to keep all 3 – now I am only keeping one coin per mint.
It is stated on US Mint website specification section that each re-issue Morgan and Peace Silver Dollars that the finish is uncirculated, not proof or burnished. (See attached screenshot from US Mint website for Morgan O Silver Dollar).
Larry T and harryg, your instances of receiving “problematic” 2021 Morgans is downright SPOOKY, considering the statistically small sample size we CoinNews commenters represent. It gave me pause to reexamine the 2 CCs, 2 Os, 3 Ds and 3 Ss in my possession. All 10 coins are nearly flawless, and by today’s grading standards (PCGS/NGC) are at least MS-69. Not knowing how widespread the problems are which you have reported, I can only consider myself fortunate (or lucky) to have received the coins I got. I got a Proof ASE a couple years back that had what seemed to be a “fleck” on it and sent it back for a replacement. Maybe I shoulda kept it? Yeah, right.
As strange as it may seem my Morgan Philadelphia and Peace coins were shipped in separate packages both from Irving. According to tracking they were to arrive Tuesday but now one is in Cincinnati and the other still in Dallas. There are daily non-stop flights between Cincinnati and Dallas. Shipments from Memphis are by ground but with various routings. So shipments from Irving probably go by air to many destinations.

OK i may kick myself….but i was determined to complete the set. I bought a D and S Morgan off ebay for 125 each.(free shipping) I know i know $40 above mint price each. but MILES cheaper than the $400-$500 they were asking when they were first flipped on ebay by resellers……soooo i went for it (to me it seemed a reasonable markup….even thouight the coins were overpriced to begin with). May have a cost a little more this way but….to put it plainly….it made ME happy to complete my set with those missing 2 coins.
You got what you wanted and completed your set – good going! That is all that matters. Prices could go up also.
I am contemplating getting the 2021 ASE reverse proof (21XJ) set on eBay. But I am in no rush so prices may go up or stay flat, chance I am taking.

I agree with Chris T. I know the feeling – had the itch to complete the set, found a source for an example of a CC and O for less than the $600+ graded prices I’ve seen, so I jumped (pre-ordered). Payed about 3x, but I’ll forget all about that after I have them. Betting with my head, not over it … or something.
BTW…it would be nice if the mint or another vender offered a display/storage box for all the 6 2021 Morgans and Peace Dollar.
EZZZZZZZZZZACTLY domenic! Recent US Mint packaging atrocious and cheap. Miss the days when silver dollars came in a felt covered hinged box with a metal eagle on its top. Last one I got with good presentation box was the WWII Commemorative Silver Eagle with the 75 privy mark.
Why make collector coins and present them in shoddy and cheap box? And charge more for the coins and medals (medals just come in plastic bag wrapping)?
Heir Kaiser, it’s like Mint just forcing you to go to one of the grading services to get a better holder for your coin. And the cases those grading services put your coins in are just as bad in presentation.
Agree Kaiser. Sad but true. And sad that Mint has taken the cheesy chintzy route with it’s presentation packaging on its precious metals items.
Uhm, Mint has done both Kaiser. Silver dollars, commemoratives, medals, everything has gone up in price and cheapened the presentation boxes. Win, win for the Mint. Lose, lose for buyers 🙁

I’m fairly happy with the coins I received. I finally received all six (the last four I was waiting for) today. I really like the Peace dollar best but it looks like there’s a tiny ding on the 8 o’clock edge of the obverse. It’s hard to tell for sure without opening the case it’s in. Otherwise I’m happy with it and only bought one of each to collect, not for resale. I think the D and S mintmarks like too small. The Eagle has landed! Got all my backorders now. Morgan New Orleans came in earlier this week and the three Peace Dollars came today Saturday. All on great shape / good strikes – very pleased.

Just thought I would update everything after complaining about my Morgan S mint which has a nasty looking nick on the bust. I got the rest of my coins today and all were problem free. Just beautiful. In summation, 13 of the 14 coins I ordered the past few months were problem free. Just that Morgan S mint was the only stinker. So with all my talk about figuring a good way to store the morgans, peace, ase etc… I came across this box on amazon meant to store mint sets. Storing them singley in my safes is a headache….but with these i can keep groups together and label the outside. Very sturdy and seem like a good long term solution to the ever growing single issue dollars. Thoughts? They are made by guardhouse and reasonably priced….especially when you consider what they are protecting
What are they made out of? Wood? Resin? Cardboard? In my opinion they need to breath a little more and you might want a Hydrosorbent Silica Gel Desiccant. I actually found some plastic containers that were meant for crafts but fit the boxes perfectly and provide full protection but pricey – I do overkill……

Myself it is just cardboard boxes. There is also an 18′ GoldenRod in there. I use special ‘microwave’ plastic for documents, currency, etc. to keep them dry. I believe they are the same as the monster boxes (polypropylene or recycle 5 stamped).

These dollars are remarkably beautiful, but how did the mint do it? The mint lists the finish as uncirculated but look under a microscope and you’ll see it isn’t mechanically burnished or laser frosted. Have they told us how they created this brilliant uncirculated finish? It is a lot more than just “uncirculated”, it looks counterfeit resistant.
Maybe I’m naive, but I didnt think UNC constituted any kind of other special treatment. Just stamp the coin and immediately encapsulate it, but not put in circulation (bags, rolls, etc). Maybe they typically clean the blanks but skipped a step in this case … perhaps for a more classic look, looking closer to the original coins??
Yup – it doesnt help that they confuse things with something like Enhanced UNC – which has some sort of laser treatment (on the dies?) or something, that gives a frosted effect.
“Burnished” has me scratching my head – is that what they do for bullion coins – or is that Business strike? I’ve only heard of that rather recently (maybe a few years or so). It sounds like a treatment on top of UNC, but why do that for bullion “investment” pieces?
On top of that, my UNC 2020 palladium says its “Special Strike”? Whazzat?? And the official grade is SP70, so why not MSnn?

In 2016 they did the gold version of the 100 yr anniversary Mercury dimes, Standing Liberty qtrs, and Walking Liberty halves. They indicated those were Business Strikes – but sold from the mint. That lead to some disappointment in the anniv re-issues. Those shoulda been Proof (IMO) – makes one wonder.
So that’s what all those returns are about. They’re the only coins that I see with a weekly negative revision to their numbers.
