Gold and silver snapped a two-session losing streak Thursday but platinum and palladium declined for a third day in a row.
Gold for December delivery rose $6.50, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,800 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.
"Technically, gold bulls have the slight overall near-term technical advantage but are fading and need to show more power soon to keep a four-week-old price uptrend alive on the daily bar chart. Bulls’ next upside price objective is to produce a close above solid resistance at the July high of $1,836.20," said Jim Wyckoff, senior analyst at Kitco Metals.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,785.10 to a high of $1,803.40. They shed 0.3% on Wednesday and they gave back 1.9% in their start to the trading week on Tuesday.
Silver for December delivery gained 12.1 cents, or 0.5%, to finish at $24.177 an ounce. Silver futures traded between $23.86 and $24.36. They declined 1.3% on Wednesday and they fell 1.7% on Tuesday.
In other precious metals futures:
October platinum dipped $1.60, or 0.2%, to $974.50 an ounce, ranging from $967.30 to $984.60.
- Palladium for December delivery fell $94.50, or 4.2%, to $2,142.80 an ounce, trading between $2,136 and $2,267.50.
