The United States Mint last week opened pre-sales of their 2021 Morgan Silver Dollars with privy marks of ‘CC’ and ‘O’. Limited to 175,000 each, the pair were unavailable within 25 minutes of their release.
The U.S. Mint’s latest sales report doesn’t provide much insight beyond what is already known, showing each dollar at sales a bit above 174,000.
Elsewhere, the Mint’s clad and silver proof sets were again popular. Pull out the silver dollars and they would have ranked first and second in weekly sales, just like they did a week earlier.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 273 numismatic products. Eighty-one of them outperformed their prior weekly gains compared to 41 previously. Not counting the new silver dollars so as to compare apples to apples, 4 products increased by more than 1,000 units against 3 previously.
In addition, 17 products saw their sales reduced compared to 21 previously. The reductions ranged from 1 to 2,449 with the latter tagged to the 2021-W $50 American Gold Buffalo Proof Coin.

Yeah KW that’s a lot of money but it will still take two weeks to issue the credit to a credit card. I ordered the backorder the same day it was released and I got my coin within days and it had free shipping. Maybe the coins never even left the mint and they are just reconciling all their boosted numbers from a dying hobby lol
But if the coins didn’t in fact get shipped to the customer wouldn’t that transaction have been a cancelled order instead of a return? Also, a cancellation wouldn’t involve having to count and check the condition of each of those many hundreds of coins. Since that item is still on Back Order after a week I would guess the Mint hasn’t processed them back into stock yet.

The US Mint puts these coin for sell ,but you can never determine through to order any coins . The mint is terrible about this but you sell a lot of them to the shopping channel . I think it’s a wonderful hobby and I was a jock in public schools and then in college also!!! So you can see coin collecting reaches all sorts of people. I still look through my pocket change……
Coin collecting can indeed be fun for anyone, and it’s good to be in contact with other collectors because that makes you realize you’re a part of something bigger.
Hey I am a Republican and I think it sucks big time. I want to complain to my two Senators, cuz the Mint doesn’t give a damn. One of us was on the phone on hold, while I was online right at noon. I even had two in my cart, and then it came back that I was too late. The entire US mint is rigged to support the big Coin Resellers. I am done with ordering from the US MINT. And they don’t care as long as they make their sales.
Everything you say is 100% on the money! If the Mint didn’t operate the way it does coin collecting would be much more fun again. We’ll see; maybe someday.

From a business viewpoint the Mint’s aggregate total sales were a resounding success. From a numismatic perspective i.e. from a collector’s viewpoint, the precise supply meets demand equation of manufactured rarities, was an abject failure and a sure sign the hobby as a whole is an endangered species. In fact, the way the numismatic community chooses to observe the country’s 250 Anniversary in 2026 will be the surest indicator as to whether the hobby thrives and survives — or dies.
I won’t believe that coin collecting will ever disappear. The worst I can imagine is viewing our collections in darkened caves lit by lamps fueled with mastodon or mammoth dung.
When you look at these numbers it’s pretty obvious why the web site crashes and burns during a high-demand event like the Morgan Dollar debacle. 350K of those in 15 minutes, about 30K everything else combined over 7 days. The site is sized for routine and not peak demand.
Be careful what you wish for. Whatever the mint does to address the problems with the site will almost certainly involve the use of a virtual waiting room, which will prove more frustrating to users than than the current roulette wheel we have now.
I feel that quantities of these 2021 dollars should have been limited so individuals like myself could have bought one or a set. Poor planning on the Mint’s part.

I don’t think this is a case of all big dealers getting them. If you look on e-bay, next to the sellers name is a number and a “star”. My understanding is this represents the number of items sold by a person. Most of those I have seen have been less than 100, so it appears a lot of small timers are selling reselling the coins. My brain is too small to grasp the process of buying a coin from the US Mint, then selling that coin, 4 months before it has even been delivered.
PayPal protection lasts 90 days, as does your ability to downvote/comment on the seller … so your recourse should the product not get delivered isn’t a whole lot.

It wasn’t nearly as bad when he was Lewis Revels’ (possibly not the most scrupulous numismatist himself) sidekick. My biggest complaint was they never mentioned (you’ll love this KW) that the 1915 Maria Theresa gold ducats they were hawking were, in fact, modern restrikes. Nonetheless, I cashed in/traded up on several coins I purchased from them and received a few thousands for what cost me a few hundred! Ahhh, the good ol’ 20th century when they didn’t cheat that much, and you only had to wait a year or so to compound value 5x, 10x, or more.
Sure, I could tell it was a restrike from the TV images (i.e., it was obviously new). But they kept saying, “1915…,” which irritated me so much — especially after repeated requests to mention they were restrikes — so I boycotted HSN from that point through today (at least 30 years). The gold coins were quite large, but wafer thin, probably a quarter ounce or so. Other than boycotting HSN, meeting good people in scary places and weirdly winning door prizes and getting convenient parking spots, pretty much all of that was, let’s call it satire. I did have a single gold Ducat and made better than a hundred bucks on it, but missed the big jump by 3 days. I’m a casual collector and got 2 cc’s on my phone whilst sitting in the parking lot of a Tractor Supply store within a few minutes. I was there to get some corn for the raccoons and squirrels. I was happy and so were my furry friends.
That’s not entirely correct. I am a”little collector”, but was fortunate to procure 5 of the O Morgans from the mint. I’ve been buying from them for the last 25 years and have had my good moments and frustrating ones as well. I personally enjoy the “chase” for the coins..they’re all the more sweeter when I can get them! kind of like life in a nutshell.

The purpose of the Mint is to provide a monopoly for large coin dealers so they can jack up the premiums. It’s the same business model used by Ticketmaster for hit shows and concerts. Buy all the tickets in the first few seconds, then add 300% to the price.
Yes those Morgan dollars we called 10 minutes before 12 was on the line for over 3 hours waiting and they said you didn’t have anything I don’t know what’s happening with the mint but they’re not like what they used to be I bought a coin service since I was 16 years old now it’s hard to even get through to buy the coin

I’d be happy with one coin to be honest, but I have to deal with the hand I’m dealt, not the hand I want. I was just surprised they reduced the total to three. I’ve never seen a need to place an order for 25 coins. I’m just glad more folks will have a chance and that includes me.
So tell me what the big deal is about the 2021 Morgan and Peace dollars are they are not minted where the origional 1921 were minted.May-be I am wrong but what is the big deal about them?
Some are referring to the privy coins as “tribute” coins and that’s fair but the fact these are struck at the US Mint rather than say, “The Bradford Exchange” is a plus. I personally consider for example, the Morgan (D) struck at the Denver Mint to be a continuation of the series after a 100 year pause and 5 years ago the US Mint asked me for coin suggestions and this was one of those suggestions so I’m excited to see that suggestion come to fruition. I would regard these coins as commemoratives. Then again, so was the 1932 Washington Quarter and look what happened in 1934. If they continue these dollars next year, then yes, a continuation of the series.
I unboxed three Morgans with the CC privy mark. I have found a small mark on all three coins in the same place. Obverse side in the field between the first and second star to the right of the date and the curl of hair. Second mark is also on the obverse between the dot and Unum and the top of the cap. My (S) Eagle had a significant Die Chatter on the obverse near the rim – my Morgan CC was supposed to be delivered today but is held up at the USPS hub whatever that means.
I think it’s beyond obvious that the collusion between the US Mint and it’s henchmen Graders, Dealers and flipper is more is significant to the point the Mint is giving all the good coins to the their cohorts and all the crap to us retail collectors.
