I think the presidential dollar coin series was a huge failure. So much so that they were only made for collectors partway through the series. The general public has no interest in using dollar coins. By not withdrawing dollar bills from circulation it didn’t give Americans a reason to use them. There are billions of these coins sitting in government vaults. Seems like such a waste of money minting them only to end up in storage. As a collector of coins, I don’t like the dollar coin program. I lost interest when the golden dollars removed the date and mintmarks from the obverse to edge lettering. I might actually consider collecting dollars if the edge lettering wasn’t there.
