Precious metals bounced Tuesday following their losses on Monday. The day’s gains ranged from 0.2% for palladium to 2.5% for silver.
Gold for February delivery added $23.20, or 1.3%, to settle at $1,855.30 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement was the highest since last Tuesday, Dec. 8.
"Gold is hovering once again around the $1850 level and should look to extend gains if Congress continues to take strides towards passing the compromised COVID relief bill," MarketWatch quoted Edward Moya, who’s also a senior market analyst at Oanda.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,828.50 to a high of $1,859.30. They slipped 0.6% on Monday, marking their lowest settlement since Dec. 2.
Silver for March delivery surged 59.7 cents to close at $24.644 an ounce. Like for gold, silver’s close was its best since Dec. 8. Silver futures traded between $23.94 and $24.70. They retreated 0.2% on Monday.

January platinum tacked on $23.70, or 2.3%, to $1,039.30 an ounce, ranging from $1,009.50 to $1,045.
- Palladium for March delivery added $5.10 to $2,324 an ounce, trading between $2,303.50 and $2,369.

In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:
- Gold gained $19.50, or 1.1%, to $1,850.65 an ounce.
- Silver rose 36 cents, or 1.5%, to $24.215 an ounce.
