2020-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle Release

by Darrin Lee Unser on November 19, 2020 · 41 comments

Today, Nov. 19th, the United States Mint introduces its 2020-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle and offers it for sale to the public at noon ET.

2020-W $50 Uncirculated American Gold Eagle, case and certificate

Each uncirculated Gold Eagle is encapsulated for protection and mounted in a burgundy presentation case. A U.S. Mint Certificate of Authenticity is also included.

The 7,000-limited gold piece is the last in the series to showcase the inaugural reverse design which first appeared in 1986. The coin is struck in 22-karat gold and features an uncirculated collector grade finish created by using burnished coin blanks and special coin dies.

American Gold Eagles debuted more than three decades ago. Originally available in bullion and proof versions, this uncirculated variety was added in 2006. All have born the same basic designs.

Coin Designs

Found on coin obverses (heads side) is Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ full-length figure of Liberty. She is shown with flowing hair and holding a torch in her right hand and an olive branch in her left. This design was first on 1907-1933 $20 gold coins and is considered by many to be one of the most beautiful to ever appear on American coinage. Obverse inscriptions include LIBERTY, 2020, and a ‘W’ indicating the coin’s production at the West Point Mint.

The uncirculated Gold Eagle’s obverse and reverse. Next year’s coin will feature a different reverse design.

Designed by Miley Busiek, coin reverses (tails side) depict a male eagle carrying an olive branch flying above a nest containing a female eagle and her eaglets. This design will change next year. Surrounding the eagles are inscriptions of UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, E PLURIBUS UNUM, IN GOD WE TRUST, the composition of 1 OZ. FINE GOLD, and the face value of 50 DOLLARS.

Pricing is $2,490. That is subject to change weekly according to a matrix the U.S. Mint uses which ties its gold coin pricing to market conditions.

For reference, the 2019 Uncirculated Gold Eagle has been unavailable for some time. Its last sales were reported at 5,851. The 2018 edition topped out at 8,518 while the one from 2017 ended at 5,800.

Im over it and done! These last few weeks Im pissed off at the mint and refuse to give into flippers and all the BS hype on the US coins to make a $$$. As my real passion is Sovereigns and Pre 1933 gold coins in high grades. History and Hobby which coin collecting should be.

Romuald712

Passed on this coin. Too easy. Had it in the bag and credit card info popped right up. If I don’t have to fight for it that tells me there’s not enough excitement for the coin. My logic as an investor, not a collector.

bkk

Being the last one in the series and a low mintage im in on this 1

Llabs

As an investor, you might have considered that perhaps the mint ordered up more server power for the occasion after being so criticized for pathetic website performance at prior rush hours. That, rather than slack demand, might account for your ease at almost getting this.

The item sold out in 25 minutes – faster than the WW2 V75 items (perhaps because the website was so sluggish for that sale on Nov 9).

Romuald712

In hindsight, I wish I would’ve bought it. Didn’t know about the added server power.

V75 AGE sold out in 7 MINUTES Au in about 1 1/2hrs…..This coin will not be a rarity, it will eventually be a bullion coin value

Arash

Well the thing is the business strike 2020 does not have the W mint mark. This one is struck in West Point and has a population of 7000. This makes it a numismatic rarity. In addition the 2020 proof version is not available for purchase as a single coin, and it is not clear how many 2020 American Gold Eagle Proof coins have been sold. In my humble opinion with brief mint shutdown and delays in 2020, most low mintage iconic coins of 2020 will be special.

Andy

The mint is producing far too many numismatic rarities. W mint marks, S reverse proofs, etc. Coin dealers already do most of their volume as bullion dealers, the hot 2014 Kennedy stuff is essentially bullion today. Look at where the 2009 Lincoln cents are today, with the copper uncirculated matte finish is about 75 cents each, even with a mintage similar to the 1909S VDB. The 2009 mint set sells for about $20, subtract $14.30 face and divide by 8. A lot more numismatic items still have a lot of air under them, starting with the 2012 proof set. There… Read more »

The Mint royally screwed me on all the WWII coins and the Royal set, but I won on this one at least. I managed to get 1 before they sold out 🙂

bkk

This is a nicer coin than the royal mint IMO, as an American Eagle is more of a collectable and the final coin of a set, The Royal set is kinda Nichy.

Shannen

I got mine today! Easy in, easy out. Quick sale. Happy to receive it and send it off for grading!

Llabs

Not like the V75 at all. Easy peasy – i got one, my son got one, other son got one. (All separate households).

Mike

As of 11:27 AM the coin is currently unavailable

Joe Who

I don’t see why this sold out, nothing special with this coin..another hype piece..not really low mintage…don’t buy it in the second hand market and let the flippers go crazy and sell back to dealer at cost… Gold price is high. Unemployment money has got people doing crazy things.

bkk

I think it Sold out as its the last in the series and will be more collectable as time goes on

Chas. Barber

They are making more next year!! Burnished not sure but AGE & ASE w/the “old” reverses, the USM pulled a bait n switch on everyone, LAST YEAR!! Except for NEXT year, Ryder a Trump shill runs it like a Trump Casino…..

Ryan

Anything made in 2020 will be a collectable. It is the events surrounding the year and the quantity of the coin that make all the difference.

Mark D.

You mean the same way we all memorialize the 1918 flu?

Ryan

Cute

Andy

1964 coins are the scarcest, most valuable coins in the history of the world, the lines at banks to get 1964 dated coins haven’t gone down in 56 years.

  • Wait a second…the posting for 20EH says “Last of inaugural design”
PAUL CHIU

Finally, got this one, last of the Eagles design. Wasted 2+ hours on the V75 Eagles and V75 24Ks

sam tweedy

Send it off to a grading service and throw more money away!!!

Mike

Completely agree. Coins I’ve had graded by PCGS literally rot and spot while my ungraded coins remain pristine. I’ve even had proof coins graded as MS. PCGS is trash.

Henry

The coin is available this morning.

Ryan

Yeah, I just saw that, I wonder what is up.

S.C.

Someone probably canceled their order. I just got off the phone trying to cancel mine, but was unable to cancel. I didn’t buy it intending to keep it, but it doesn’t look like demand is high (at least right now) so I guess I’m stuck with it for a while.

Per U.S. Mint terms, you have 7 days from the day you receive any of their products in the mail to return your coin for a refund.

NumisdudeTX

Robert L Thom

You can return it to the Mint.

Ryan

Now it says it is unavailable

Steven Schumacher

Won’t buy a 91% gold coin

DAVID C MILLER

Sorry but I’m confused, since when is a coin 1 troy ounce Fine Gold, made with 3% Silver? What would be the purpose of adding Silver to the Gold?
Thanks,
David

cagcrisp

ALL American Gold Eagles have the same compositions in percentage terms. Always have. Nothing new here…Silver lobby used to be quite strong…

Chas. Barber

22kt coin….the balance is mostly AG & Cu…silver lightens the color just a tad…..traditional USA .9oo fine AU blend…..

Michael S

When the End of World War II coins came out, I was succesful in adding the silver and gold coins to my bag, only to be met later by this message on the US Mint Website:

“Error 1505 – Rate Limited”

The mint blocked me from making any purchase and I lost everything in my bag.

Anyone have any idea why the mint blocked me? I asked the US Mint this question, but they ignored it and it went unanswered.

Ryan

Flat out, I believe it was a scam. Look at the prices they are fetching on eBay now as well. It wouldn’t even let me log on to the site or view the coin until 20 minutes after sold out.

Abe

I got 1 of those coins my question is is it worth to keep as its aprox 700 dollars more then current gold prices opinions please

Ryan

Personally, I believe anything purchased in 2020 should hold its value as it has been a tumultuous year. On top of this, they are extremely limited, which is not normal thus making them more valuable.

Carl

It appears the US Mint is playing games, my order has been ready for UPS since Sunday, credit card has been charged, might return it IF it actually ships.

Michael S

I was successful in ordering all 4 coins from the Mayflower series. I received the 10 dollar reverse proof gold coin but the other three are “pending”. I noticed that the silver medal is on backorder in case anyone wants to order one but all the others are sold out. My guess is that the mint is waiting on the medal to complete my order but I’m worried that they will cancel it. This was 10 days ago and I’m still waiting. It would be nice if they sent me the partial shipment. I can always wait on the medal… Read more »

Carl

I would guess that many of these coins will be returned as only a very few are being sold at reasonable prices. Mine arrived today and will be going back Wednesday decided price too high and I don’t sell on eBay.
