2020-W American Eagle Coins Carry ‘V75’ Privy Mark for End of WWII [Updated]

Today, Nov. 5, the United States Mint will begin selling 2020-W Proof American Eagle Gold and Silver Coins celebrating the 75th anniversary of the end of World War II. Available at noon EST, both are issued in very limited mintages and both feature a symbolic "V75" privy mark.

The proof American Gold Eagle is restricted to just 1,945 units. The corresponding proof American Silver Eagle, meanwhile, is capped at a mintage of 75,000.

The coins carry the same obverse (heads side) and reverse (tails side) designs as their traditional counterparts. For the Gold Eagle, this includes Augustus Saint-Gaudens’ full-length figure of Liberty on the obverse and Miley Busiek’s depiction of a family of eagles on the reverse. On the Silver Eagle, we find Adolph A. Weinman’s "Walking Liberty" on the obverse and John Mercanti’s heraldic eagle with shield design on the reverse.

The V75 privy mark appears on coin obverses.

"The design outline of the privy mark represents the aerial view shape of the Rainbow Pool located at West Potomac Park in Washington, D.C., which is now an integral part of the World War II Memorial," the U.S. Mint describes.

Both coins were struck at the U.S. Mint’s facility in West Point.

Ordering and Prices

Upon their release, the 2020-W End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Coins may be ordered directly from the Mint’s online catalog for American Eagle products.

The proof Gold Eagle is $2,600 and the proof Silver Eagle is $83.00. In addition to their mintage limits, each has a household order limit of one coin.

The two coins launch a few days before another couple of related U.S. Mint products — a 2020 End of World War II 75th Anniversary 24-Karat Gold Coin and an associated 2020 End of World War II 75th Anniversary Silver Medal. These two products are scheduled to debut Nov. 9 and will feature nearly identical imagery.

Update (Nov. 5 at 12:30 pm EST): The U.S. Mint sent numismatic news editors the following message about ordering: "The United States Mint is aware of website issues impacting customers’ ability to purchase Mint products. We are working to correct the problem. Thank you for your patience."

Update 2 (Nov. 5 at 3:10 pm EST): The U.S. Mint sent numismatic news editors the following statement about sales of coins:

Statement Regarding Sales of End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Gold Proof Coin (20XE) & End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Silver Proof Coin (20XF).

"The 2020 End of WWII 75th Anniversary American Eagle One Ounce Gold Proof Coin and the End of World War II 75th Anniversary American Eagle Silver Proof Coin were released for sale at noon ET on November 5. Release of these coins resulted in the highest website traffic we have ever experienced, which greatly exceeded our expected capacity.  This high volume caused website instability, and customers encountered error messages and in some cases were unable to purchase their desired product.  Due to extremely high demand, the American Eagle Gold Proof Coin became unavailable by 12:07 p.m.  We are pleased with the initial demand, but are also in the process of evaluating the various customer concerns and system constraints and/or failures we experienced.

We want to assure you that the United States Mint remains committed to providing the highest possible level of customer service, and regret any inconvenience or frustration this buying experience caused."

Sat on the phone for 30 minutes was told i needed to order online sold out by that time

N d

The mint hasn’t had phone ordering all summer due to covid

Chas. Barber

Never saw the captcha but like a MILLION Ooops & refresh but it does not refresh you had to load a new page. Crashdeluxe….Ryder is really quite a manager. I DON’T CARE I STOPPED AFTER BUYING A LOT OF THE $154 5z ATBs. Nothing appeals and the whole CRAP2.0 expeience will make the collector base grow larger & happier- I am proud of the Mint this was a fantastic skrewing of most except insiders & Tech lords with minioons

Gary Fenton

An hour and a half trying to get through. Crash Crash. Went away for an hour, Eagle was still in my cart. Mint said “Invalid.” I guess the rich people win again. Had it!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Cat

I’m so glad it wasn’t ONLY me. I try so hard to get just 1 coin and as soon as they are out of stock, you can buy them on EBAY??? How exactly does that work??? The mint claims they are legitimate…..

Jarrod

Same here, you’re definitely not alone.

Mike

I talked to my local coin dealer last week about the US mint he told me the big coin dealers get there choice on how many they want. And the people who work for the US mint have friends who want low mintage coins and they get them for there friends ..I know the US mint are scammers and will lie to you .They can kiss my A**

Chas. Barber

REVERAND!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

OTL

The resellers win again! People who actually wanted to get the coin as gifts or for their own collection missed out because of the resellers. Luckily I didn’t give up and was able to secure one for my dad without paying an inflated price. I was on the site from 12:00 and didn’t get to purchase until 1:03pm thanks to all the website malfunctions that everyone else experienced as well.

Edward Ermey

AGREED!!

Dirk G

I actually got a gold and silver in my cart but crashed on checkout. Then I got the “oops” messages, then got the security “banned” messages. When I finally got back to my cart, the gold showed as unavailable. Then it took another 30 minutes of oops and banned to get the gold out of my cart. Then another 30 min to finally get an order confirmation. I probably spend 1.5hrs working on this but I did supposedly get a silver.

Big T

That is EXACTLY what happened to me. Except it only took about 30 min. I first tried to get the gold eagle and then unavailable and got stuck in my cart as well, and it wouldn’t let me get it out of the cart! But after about 10 times I did get the silver one (at least got a order number). And that one was 75K pieces – I was shocked that one sold out so quickly.

Al T

This experience has to be the worst I’ve encountered with the US mint. Like others, I tried ordering both a gold and a silver victory eagle, ended up banned, and when I finally did get back on, I was able to get my order for the silver eagle that I placed in my cart, through constant refreshing, getting oops messages, and finally a confirmation for a silver victory eagle. The gold version sold out in 7 minutes; my order finally went through at 1PM for the silver. I consider myself fortunate for getting one.

OTL

I had the exact experience. Oops, Refresh and banned error messages! However I also had to complete a captcha multiple times. (I got tired of seeing boats, cars and bikes). When I finally made it to checkout, I kept having to re-enter all my info over and over until it finally went through at 1:03pm.

Sam Conroy

After about an half hour of OOPS REFRESH, I finally got my order in. 5 minutes later coin was unavailable.

Jeff S

When the 2019-S enhanced proof sale came up last year I was so frustrated I swore I would not buy another US Mint product. I was advised later not to use my pre-loaded credit card and enter the information directly as that was somehow delaying the process. Today I was able to get on and after countless times of hitting refresh and reentering information I was able plow through to get both coins. Just received the conformation emails. I think if the mint wants to offer these limited mintage coins in the future, they should do it by lottery where… Read more »

M Hop

My only option was to enter card info direct

cowboy bob

I removed the preload card details a couple years ago. I wish they would remove all of the page refreshes and just let me push process order after i enter my name address and credit card. It would save so much headache for everyone

jenna m henry

I had one in my cart and they banned me from making the purchase. I’m done buying from the mint. I was entering my card info when I was banned. I can spend my money elsewhere as they

Samuel Conroy

I don’t understand how they could ban you.

LKNY

When your IP address makes too many requests on their site in a short amount of time, they banned that IP from making requests for a few minutes. I think this was put in place to prevent some automated ‘bots and denial of service attacks. I experienced it a few times today and the ban was short, only 1-2 minutes.

Like others, I had to complete the captcha a few times and got may “oops…” messages. From start to finish it took about 25 minutes but I finally got a confirmation number for a silver coin.

OTL

Lucky you! I was able to purchase one also, but it took me 1 hour and 3 minutes after receiving all the error messages everyone else did! from the oops, refresh, banned and captcha errors… you name it!

Jarrod

I got the same message. Kept crashing at various points, refreshed, then was banned for refreshing too often. Then I got back in, but it crashed at the purchase button. Finally the silver was unavailable. Deeply frustrating.

Uncle Sams Nephew

The ban was only for that moment. It did not stick if you logged in a second, third, sixth, or tenth time. Open a new page in Chrome if banned.

Samuel Conroy

After about an half hour of OOPS REFRESH, I finally got my order in. 5 minutes later coin was unavailable

Armin Krupp

Samuel, I experienced same exact issue. Problem is not us. Problem is the mint investing into the wrong SW. It is a petty how this is handled, if one can call it that. But what are the individuals options, none whatsoever. Now I can buy it for double the price from some lucky one that puts it on Ebay. What a system? The people from the mint in charge of public relations should do more there (more thinking definitely) before they issue these type of products for the selected “lucky” few?

THOMAS HAROUTUNIAN

Pinehurst Coins is offering $400 for the Silver America Eagle and $6K for the Gold Coin. You receive your order and then send an email to them to start the payment process and ship it to them make sure you insure it for the whole value, etc. I get their newsletter which said the first point of contact is to email them at Contact@PinehurstCoins.com   Also, for these website traffic reasons, its a good idea to buy the fastest internet service for your needs at home. The higher mo. payment is well worth it rather than spending time invoking the name… Read more »

I AM THROUGH EVER BUYING ANOTHER PRODUCT FROM THE MINT. WHAT A JOKE, SO FRUSTRATING TRYING TO PLACE AN ORDER. NEVER AGAIN THEY CAN KISS MY A$%

Nezmo

Totally agree. This whole thing is so unfair to the regulars. They need to come up with a lottery system. Would waste less time of people crashing the site and all the frustrated individuals.

C Eich

I got a silver in my cart but crashed on checkout. Then I got the “oops” messages, then got the security “banned” messages. WTF!!! When I finally got back to my cart, the silver showed as unavailable. The mint has no business screwing customers as they so often do. I would be fired for such behavior. No accountably on their part and they don’t give two S–ts about collectors.

Dominic Paulo

They need a better system to sell these limited mintage issues-the only way to get one is through blind luck after all kinds of frustration!!

James Wichowski

The US Mint should be ashamed! I guess they haven’t been aware of errors in the past either. I am going to finish my America the Beautiful set; sell all my American Silver Eagle collection coins and never deal with the mint again. Too many other opportunities without having to deal with the quackery. Sign of the times I want no part of.

andrew

has anyone got it

steve

yeah I got one, was a headache but I did

Jenn

I got the silver one after refreshing the page over 100 times haha

Jenn

Biggest headache ever

Butch

I got a silver took almost a hour of refresh.

Brian.W

I got one of the silver but it took over an hour of frustration. Even if I was in it to flip it, which I’m not! I’m not sure it was worth the time invested.

littlewolf

I finally got one after being logged on before noon and then bumped, dumped, banned, and scammed. On the phone with my neighbor who went through the same exact experience. Took 70 minutes of persistent banging away on keyboard. Neighbor’s came through at about the same time. There’s got to be a better procedure to make this whole thing less of a mess.

LKNY

Jack

Added sharp 12 a silver and Gold and it was keep loading and in 2 minutes I git message that Gold coin is unavailable and I had to delete from cart and Just had to get only one.

Jack

How much is the worth of the Silver Bullion?

Big T

1 oz silver is about 25 dollars

Rob S

The 2019-S silver eagle experience tempered my expectations with this (1945 for the gold vs 30K for the 2019). But why do I still feel like my girlfriend just dumped me? lol When loading the webpage circled the drain, I knew hope was fleeting. Had the gold in my cart, almost all the way thru, and got to the refresh button (wish I clicked it, maybe), no dice. Got the silver eagle in the cart and it showed the gold still there but sold out, so removed it. I got confirmation I got 1 of those at least (they seem… Read more »

FWIW – They shoulda minted 75k of the gold priced at $1945. Wouldnt *THAT* have been nice??? Give more of us a chance.
OK I’ll go back to my fantasy universe now.

For the record, thats 2 proof eagles I dont have (picked up a couple aftermarket that I didnt have – incl the 2019-S); this V75 gold and the 95W silver. Dont think I’ll be buying these aftermarket.

Christopher Williams

They are already selling for $500.00.

Rob S

And from what others are saying $10k+ for the gold. Not gonna mortgage the homestead for that, so #2 I’ll have to do w/o. Pockets aint nearly THAT deep!!
Getting the silver at least.

Wonder how many gold V75s are gonna grade at 70??? ha.

Andy

And in 5 years they will be spot +20

Vadim

I wonder if order by phone got most of the coins? Anyone know?

BKk

The phone was only a busy signal, tried calling many times after being locked out

OTL

they were only allowing online purchases of the coins.

cowboy bob

phones are not on because of covid is my understanding

Jim

Correct, you can not order by phone.

Brian.W

Like everyone I had my problems. I figured there would be so I was logged into my account and on the page to order at noon. That’s when the trouble started. At noon when I tried to add the item. the page crashed and I spent the next hour with oops something wrong happened to access denied and so on. Once I actually had the coin in my cart trying to complete the order the problems continued. Crash after crash. Denied login attempts an so on. I’m really not sure the coins are worth the investment in time and frustration,… Read more »

Seeing the gold coin already has completed sales on Ebay for $9500 I would say the $7000 profit is worth the hour of frustration.

Brian.W

There is that – even though I’m not into flipping.

Mike Unser from CoinNews.net

We’ve added another updated section at the end of the article. The latest is a U.S. Mint statement regarding sales of the coins.

Mike Hunt

It took me 1 hour and 29 minute with at least a dozen times of having one in my cart, payment ready … just to be kicked off again and again and again. In the process I went over to the CoinNews. net site just to find that there were so many other frustrated buyers that THIS SITE was also frozen at times. One person suggested just pounding the REFRESH button again and again, so I did. And guess what? At 1 hour and 30 minutes I finally got one. I think this is the Mint’s way of giving you… Read more »

SHOWARD

Horrible process, it was in my cart and crashed not allowing me to buy the coins!! I wonder how many regular collectors actually got these coins, I am thinking none. They are now on Ebay for 20K. I too am done with the mint, they are making collecting impossible for just a collector, it is all big business now! Very angry!

Edward Ermey

Agreed…the bots won yet again…

OTL

my thoughts exactly! Resellers for the win again unfortunately.

Gary Sudol

I just send the mint an email telling them that my attempt to buy this today online was a disgrace(same issues listed below). I have been buying coins from the mint for 40 years but, I will NEVER buy anything from them again. They have lost a good customer. I can’t believe the online site is so bad and the mint is so incompetent.

Christopher Williams

I did the same thing, Gary. At one point, the Mint blocked me temporarily to confirm I wasn’t a Bot. Today was unacceptable.

Edward Ermey

I agree normal collectors just got skrewwwwed today!

Goat99

It took me 68 minutes to complete my order for the new V75 Silver Eagle today. There were constant crashes. I got this coin into my “bag” right away but when I went to pay and hit the checkout button it was constant crashes and tons of blank white screens with a small silver Refresh button that lead me to even more crashes. Frustrating. I went through the same exact experience last year getting the fancy 2019 reverse proof Silver Eagle but that one only took me 11 minutes. I really like collecting these new coins but the Mint’s website… Read more »

I got on the mint website and purchased both coins and repeatedly had to refresh during the payment process. After 20 minutes the site came back and said I had to remove the Gold coin from my cart because it wasn’t available. This really angers me because the same thing happened months ago when I attempted to purchase the 2020 Enhance Silver Eagle. I had it in my cart, during the payment process it kept making me refresh until I finally lost the coin. I just don’t understand how you can get the coin in your cart and waiting in… Read more »

That’s what I was fearful of. Once it’s in your cart considering it was available when it was placed there, the only way you should loose it is if you couldn’t make a CC authorization. The technology exist. This shouldn’t be that difficult.

Chris

Like wise totally disgust with them. Bunch of A holes! Should never crash like that. Also the idiots who create such a hype for a profit too in my book. I never have an issue with other world mints on a new day release. Will never buy us mint from them directly.

Peter L. Gordon

I got two captcha messages, both asking me to click on pictures with bicycles. Got past that after a few oops messages, and then after 18 minutes of refreshes and other database errors, including to have to enter my credit card information several times (even though it is already saved in the USM database), was finally able to order successfully, 1 American Silver Eagle WWII w/Privy Mark. I smell Mike Mezack in this whole thing due to the one coin limit per household.

sam tweedy

Mike Mezack got his share to send to ANACS to flip still the “KING” of coin collecting….UNDERSTAND!!!!!

Edward Ermey, classic Orwellian “double-speak” on the part of the US Mint.

I had four family members trying exactly and I mean exactly at 12: eastern standard time.
Same problems as below..
No question we were block from ordering..sadly

Michael Farnsworth

I was on the Mint’s website at 0900 (PST) and experienced all the issues other collectors mentioned. By 0920 I was frustrated enough I considered quitting. I decided to give it one more try using Foxfire (Chrome was the original browser). I got through, ordered the silver coin and was finished by 0930.

As of 1350 hrs I have received both an order acknowledgement and an order confirmation.

Uncle Sams Nephew

I got mine after one hour selecting cars, boats, motorcycles and opps. I tried several tactics and had success. Tried to buy the cheapest coin first (Geo Wash Innov $1, $6.95) to get out of the crowd and hope for a back door express lane, no go. Had one in the final screen and hit CONFIRM, but no go…Opps blablabla again. Finally, got in, saw the next screen and let it sit for a few looong minutes, then clicked, and I advanced to the next screen and again waited. Got through by going slow and waiting each screen. Hope it… Read more »

Uncle Nephew — I gotta give you THE AWARD for the most creative approach (that back door thing) that I’ve seen discussed on this site. Hope it eventually worked for you. It took me 1.5 hours of getting in, being kicked off, OOPs, and what appeared to be continuous freeze frames … to finally be successful. And I must have been to that very last step at least 4 times during which time the Mint says to not press any buttons while they finalize the order. Now I wonder what condition my coin will be. I don’t know for sure if different tactic beat the system but I got mine and best wishes for your’s.

Thanks CN for your keeping us all posted.

Unca Neph — I think you have insight into the whole process. PLEASE do a reply when you get your coin, describing its condition AND how much wine you drank to soothe the pains of ordering it!

Uncle Sams Nephew

Will do. No wine, just too much caffinated coffee and two aspirin.

USN — My coin was delivered today, beating the anticipated Monday delivery date. It looks flawless with the possible exception of some extremely small (visible only with a magnifying glass) blue fibers from the coin’s presentation packaging inside edges. Please forgive my photography as I do not have a macro lens. The coin is still really beautiful. — Mike

Got it in excellent shape, it remains in OGP and I hope we never again crash the website that’s made of eggshells.

RickyBobbyTexas

had 2 diff computers and browsers (Edge and Firefox) as well as a cell phone. “Oops””Refresh” more times than I can count on all devices. Finally? My cell phone went thru. It was also the device that went thru for the SAE S Enh Rev Prf earlier in the year. The US Mint needs to get it together! I also got the CAPTIA (SP) deal once as well. Even at payment, it kept crashing. After about 25 minutes of trying, I was finally able to complete my purchase.

Melissa W.

I had edge and firefox both open too and kept getting the click on all the boat pics you see to prove your not a bot on edge, so I eventually closed edge and just used firefox and was able to at least grab a silver one. Use firefox only.. I think with different browsers open, they were thinking I was a bot.

M Hop

I got the captcha numerous times along with the “oops”. Managed to get a silver in my cart. It took about 10 attempts to get ot paid for. Took almost an hour. I guess I got extremely lucky. I have several friends who weren’t. It was extremely hectic.

Chas. Barber

The Mint only needs to kiss you or A feel around when the F your arse

Sherril

Has anyone ever got the captha thing before when using a phone or I-pad at your own house?

Ross

I managed to get both. Pure luck. I experienced everything described on this blog… numerous refreshes, false starts and re-dos…I almost didn’t believe it when I got an order confirmation for the gold. Went back and ordered the silver. Then tried to see if the Gold was showing as still available and got banned! all this happened between 12:00 and 12:03. Happy I got them, but not an enjoyable process in the least. I am a collector of gold eagles, so at least one is going to a good home without a “scalper” markup.

Jeff S

Me too. With the previous bad experience I had with the enhanced eagle I wasn’t even going to bother but I had a break in work before noon so I thought why not. Had the gold eagle at 12:03 and the silver at 12:07. After reading the comments here I really appreciate how lucky I was. I am a collector and not a scalper so that makes two going directly into a collection. However the aftermarket helps me explain to my wife why I put a $2,600 charge on the credit card without talking with her first.

rosa solache

I tried to buy and it would not let me! not fair..

Jeff In Mi

I was extremely lucky. I was signed in ahead of time, and kept refreshing the page so I wouldn’t get signed out. It was taking quite a few hits on the “refresh” button the closer it got to noon. So about 30 seconds before noon (my computer time) I started hitting the refresh button. I managed to get a silver eagle in my cart, then had to wait a bit for the payment page to load. Had to refresh that a couple times and re-enter my card security code, then I was able to hit the button to actually complete… Read more »

Many dealers pay shills to order low mintage coins from the mint. For instance, this coin sold for $83. Dealers have lists of people (shills) that they’ll call and tell them if they can get one of these eagles, they’ll buy it from them for, say, $200. Then the dealer will put the coin for sale for $500. This is why you see some dealers with a number of coins like this silver eagle for sale. It makes it even harder for collectors like us to even get one coin for our collection unless you want to pay multiples of… Read more »

Lawrence S

I got a silver. The process was akin to getting a beat down with a metal folding chair.

Thomas Barron

Really strange that a 75,000 coin issue went so fast. The Tale of Two Nations can still be purchased from the secondary for just a few dollars more than issue price, and it was a 110,000 coin issue (including Canada). Both are Silver Eagles. Why the difference in interest? The issue quantities are not THAT different.

I tried to logging in today. No luck. Just kept me jumping thru hoops. This technical glitch was the server being overloaded . So much for the silicon valley and technology. if they have no intention of actually allowing the common public to at least have a fair shot at purchasing low mintage coins then admit it, stop the promotions and stop sending me reminders and paper through the mail. i was signed in and on site before noon. its rigged its unfair and its bull. they could fix the problem if its technical but we no its not. the rich, the dealers, the relatives and friends, and the elie win again. screw them and their crap..boycot..i will pay extrs to get what i want but wont buy from mint again!

Hit that dang “Oops” page again and again and again…refreshed, logged in and it SLOWLY took me to my bag. Entered all info and…”oops” page again…but this time it went through. WHEW. Got an email confirmation from the Mint and funds were taken from my account. I will never open this and it will stay in the safe till the day I die.
