US Mint Sales: Silver River Bay Quarters Debut

2020 Salt River Bay Quarter rolls and bags
The U.S. Mint sold a combined 1,694,420 Silver River Bay quarters in rolls and bags during their first three days of release

The United States Mint released last week its 2020-W Uncirculated American Silver Eagle and seven products recognizing Salt River Bay National Historical Park and Ecological Preserve in the U.S. Virgin Islands. The U.S. Mint’s latest sales stats show how well they performed in the early going.

Released last Friday, July 10, the Silver River Bay quarter is the third of five issues for 2020. New products include rolls, bags and a three-coin set of the quarters.

The rolls and bags hold quarters from Philadelphia, Denver and San Francisco with mint marks of ‘P’, ‘D’ and ‘S’. The number sold through Sunday combined to 1,694,420 quarters.

The Silver River Bay Quarter Three-Coin Set includes uncirculated quarters from the Philadelphia and Denver Mints and a proof quarter from the San Francisco Mint. It posted three-day starting sales of 10,535. The set was the Mint’s second strongest weekly seller.

Released a week ago Wednesday, July 8, the 1-ounce .999 fine uncirculated 2020 Silver Eagle from West Point logged first-day sales of 98,682. Having been listed as "currently unavailable" following its release, just 1,817 more sold through to the weekend for a five-day total of 100,499. Last year’s coin posted five-day starting sales of 82,784 coins.

The new uncirculated Silver Eagle was the Mint’s best weekly seller.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 160 numismatic products. Seventy-one of them outperformed their prior weekly gains just like in the prior report. Not counting the new products so as to compare apples to apples, 5 products increased by more than 1,000 units compared to 5 in the last report. No products saw their sales reduced against 2 previously.

Mike Unser, Thank you for your update. Why does the “Cumulative Sales Figures” not include the stockpile of backdated U.S. Mint Gold & Silver coins sent to NGC? (Have they not been paid for?) Your 7/1/2020 article indicates coins were released in May yet have not been reported as sales. Why has the U.S. Mint not released a press release on these sales? It would/will be interesting to know how they can explain their behavior since these items were supposed to be destroyed and no longer for sale. I still wonder if Title 18 U.S.C. 1341 and 1343 were violated… Read more »

Great question Chuck – my sentiments exactly!! But I wouldn’t hold my breath waiting for a response. I worked for the fed government for many years and can assure you that they frequently pass legislation hidden in bills to cover their own agendas and gross misconduct. The mint developed a large collector base in large part to their honest reporting – so much for that….

The good news, some including those in or who were in Congress have been convicted of Mail Fraud/Wire Fraud so there is hope that people can and will be held accountable if appropriate. Bad news: some who were convicted were sent back to Congress by their voters. Common sense and credibility are gone.

The Mint released the number of 2016-2018 silver coins, gold coins & silver medals sold in the May, but refuses to say how much each product sold for by invitation-only bids from a few coin dealers (Rick Tomaska was one of the big buyers for his cable t.v. coin show!). By doing this again, like it did last year, the U.S. Mint has no credibility or business ethics or respect for its main customers (the average collector) whatsoever…SAD!

Why would you want to let people know the price? Spot silver up 31% since 5/1 and perhaps another $.40 per oz this morning.

Actually/perhaps they do not know what they “sold” nor the prices. After all, they do not still seem to know what was sold for some products in 2019.
