US Mint Sales: Basketball and Kennedy Coins Debut

The United States Mint last week introduced nine new products for collectors. Each of them were among the Mint’s best weekly sellers.

Released last Thursday at prices ranging from $37 to $644.50, the seven products with 2020 Basketball Hall of Fame Commemorative Coins combined to post first-day sales of 82,549 coins for $7,854,091. Their sales through the weekend moved higher by another 32,631 coins to a four-day total of 115,180 coins for $11,262,296.

*The Kids Set has its own product limit of 75,000 with 27% of those sold in the first day.

2020 Kennedy Half Dollar Sales Debut

Earlier last week, on Monday, June 1, the U.S. Mint released 2020-dated Kennedy half-dollars. Product options include circulating-quality halves from the Denver and Philadelphia Mints with bags of 200 coins sold for $147 and a two-roll set of 40 coins priced at $34.50.

Seven-day sales of the 50-cent pieces combined to 1,225,480 coins with splits of 14,412 in two-roll sets and 3,245 in bags. Early sales for other half-dollars in the past few years have totaled:

  • 1,053,440 coins in 2019
  • 1,145,680 coins in 2018
  • 1,063,000 coins in 2017
  • 1,150,320 coins in 2016
  • 1,019,240 coins in 2015
  • 979,760 coins in 2014
  • 778,240 coins in 2013
  • 740,160 coins in 2012
  • 776,440 coins in 2011

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 150 numismatic products. Eighty-eight outperformed their prior weekly gains against 34 previously.

In addition, 7 products saw their sales reduced compared to 2 in the previously. Aside from the 2020 Silver Proof Set, which dropped 6,678 units to 206,880, the reductions were modest.

WONDER WHAT HAPPENED TO THE SILVER PROOF SETS.GUESS A BIG SELLER HAD A CHANGE OF HEART. LOL!

The dealers buy these annual sets by bulk at a 5% discount from the Mint’s coin dealer special bulk purchase program. Then the coin dealers send back the inferior quality sets during the 7-days after receipt return policy & get a refund. In the meantime, they send the coins to be graded 70 or 69 by the grading services & charge a very high premium for coins that should grade 69 & 70 in the first place with modern minting technology.
