Gold, silver and platinum futures advanced Tuesday. Gold and silver marked almost one-month high settlements. Palladium ended the day slightly lower after posting a record on Monday.
Gold for February delivery moved up $15.20, or 1%, to close at $1,484.40 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The settlement was the highest since Nov. 6.
Gold and silver logged gains "on safe-haven buying amid a U.S. stock market sell-off following downbeat remarks from President Trump regarding the U.S.-China trade negotiations," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc., said in a daily research note.
Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,465.40 to a high of $1,487.70. They dipped 0.2% on Monday.
Silver for March delivery settled up 28.2 cents, or 1.7%, to $17.248 an ounce. Like for gold, silver’s settlement was the highest since Nov. 6. Silver futures traded between $16.94 and $17.29. They declined 0.8% on Monday.
In other precious metals futures Tuesday:

January platinum gained $11.90, or 1.3%, to $911.60 an ounce, ranging from $897.50 to $914.
- Palladium for March delivery shed 30 cents, or 0.02%, to $1,824.40 an ounce, trading between $1,815.30 and $1,834.80. On Monday, they scored a record settlement.
London Precious Metals Prices
In comparing earlier fixed London gold and silver prices from Friday PM to Monday PM:
- Gold rose $1, or 0.07%, to $1,461.15 an ounce.
- Silver dipped 9 cents, or 0.5%, to $16.875 an ounce.

United States Mint bullion sales advanced by 500 ounces in American Gold Eagle 1 ounce coins and 25,000 ounces in America the Beautiful Frank Church River of No Return Wilderness 5 ounce silver coins.
