Collectors will need to act fast and likely have some luck in getting the newest United States Mint American Silver Eagle which is guaranteed to become a new key issue.
The 2019-S Enhanced Reverse Proof American Silver Eagle goes on sale today, Nov. 14, beginning at Noon ET. Production of the San Francisco Mint strike is limited to only 30,000 pieces, garnering its status as the lowest minted Silver Eagle to date.
Priced at $65.95, orders for the 1-ounce silver coin will be restricted to one per household. This limited release procedure should help some in obtaining one of the coveted coins, at least in the initial stages of availability, and if the Mint’s ordering systems handle the strain.
In addition to its very limited mintage, the coin has two other features that boost its appeal. First, it marks only the second time the U.S. Mint has produced an enhanced reverse proof Silver Eagle. The first debuted earlier this year in the joint U.S. Mint and Royal Canadian Mint Pride of Two Nations Set. That set held an edition from the West Point Mint and all 110,000 sold.
The second item adding interest is that each coin will include a serial-numbered Certificate of Authenticity — a first for the United States Mint. Grading services are acknowledging the importance of this feature with encapsulation options for the COA. It should be noted, however, that the number on each certificate does not reflect the order in which the coin was minted.
Turning back to the coin itself, collectors will find its finish quite unique.
"This enhanced reverse proof coin has the same frosted background as a reverse proof coin, but what sets it apart are the multiple polished and frosted finishes applied to different isolated design elements," describes the U.S. Mint. "The selective polishing and frosting dramatically enhances the visual impact of the design."
Other design elements remain the same as previous incarnations.
The obverse bears Adolph A. Weinman’s full-length figure of Liberty in full stride. Liberty is enveloped in folds of the flag with her right hand reaching ahead and branches of laurel and oak in her left.
Around the image are inscriptions of LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2019.
John Mercanti’s heraldic Eagle with shield design adorns the reverse (tails side). Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 OZ. FINE SILVER, ONE DOLLAR and E PLURIBUS UNUM on a ribbon held in the eagle’s beak. Additionally, the San Francisco mintmark of ‘S’ is found to the lower left of the eagle.
Specifications for the reeded edge coin include a composition of 99.9% silver, a diameter of 1.598 inches (40.60 mm) and a weight of 1.000 troy oz. (31.103 grams).
Ordering
Those interested in purchasing one of the coins and feeling lucky enough to try can do so when its released at Noon ET by visiting the U.S. Mint’s online store of silver coins.
Phone orders may also be attempted by calling 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468). Hearing- and speech-impaired customers with TTY equipment may order by calling 1-888-321-MINT (6468).
Plans also call for the coin to be available at the Mint’s sales centers in Washington, D.C.; Philadelphia; and Denver.
Update: Late Friday afternoon, the U.S. Mint released the following statements to CoinNews:
"Yesterday, the Mint catalog website had more than 150,000 unique visitors and 1.6 million page views in the first hour of sales of the American Eagle 2019 One Ounce Silver Enhanced Reverse Proof Coin (19XE). For context, the catalog website’s previous highest traffic and page views were for the Apollo 11 product launch, when we had 124,000 visitors in one day and 863,000 page views in one hour. We are pleased with the numismatic community’s response to this product. The volume of traffic did briefly slow down our site response. However, after the first two minutes we were able to process over 1800 orders per minute on average. Completed orders were processed until all inventory was sold. Additionally, we identified approximately 5% of traffic as coming from bots, including 3% of traffic from a single IP address, of which zero orders were processed."
"At the moment of launch, there were 99,000 people online and 4700 callers waiting to purchase the American Eagle 2019 One Ounce Silver Enhanced Reverse Proof Coin (19XE). Completed orders were processed until all inventory was sold. We are constantly seeking feedback from our customers, and rest assured your voice is being heard."
After reading all of the comments I consider myself very lucky – after a couple refreshes I got in right at noon. During my order process I got three error messages but finally had one ordered in about 3 minutes. My order has been confirmed.
What a joke! Want a coin? Just go to cclarkson at EBAY. That person is pre-selling ms70’s for over $2300 under multiple listings. This person supposedly has 300 coins so must have at least 300 homes right? “One per household” – simply inexcusable!

After about 100 refreshes and reentering my CC information 4 times I finally got the place order button at 9:15pst. It’ll stay in my collection for me to enjoy until I die, then the kids can fight over it with the rest of my collection!
My daughter and I both had our coin in the cart at 10 seconds after 12:00PM. We both kept getting kicked out after repeated attempts to check out. My question is if you make a connection by telephone, you do not get bumped out. If you get a connection with the internet and have all information in your account, how do you keep getting kicked out just at the time of check out. I have bought every silver eagle the mint has ever made. I have bought them all from the US Mint. My son started collecting when he was 10 years old. I gave him my collection to get him started. He was really excited about this coin, but this is the first time I could not get my order to go through. This coin was going to be my son’s Christmas present. Sending in a check was how it used to be done before the internet. When the GSA CC dollars were sold in the mixed category we mailed the orders in with a check. Once they were all processed the orders were maxed out at 5 coins and the overpayment was returned via a green treasury punch card check.

Me too. I sent an email to the Mint last night telling them that i’m disgusted with the process and that I will NEVER BUY ANYTHING from them again. They lost a good customer.
Same here only times 20 people i know. The mint would have had to sell 33 per second to sell out in 15 minutes which means someone was allowed to buy more than one per household. Even the mint cant process 33 orders per second. This was just another sham by the mint and it hurts the hobby and true collectors .I know of no one that got through .I got as far as check out and got kicked out HOW is that possiable .ITS NOT.Personally i am done with the MINT.
Even if the 4 mint stores had 500 each, that is still 31.1 a second. Once you have an established connection you should not get booted out. I signed into my account before noon, ordered it right at noon, but started getting error messages after I entered my credit card info. I had to re-enter my info multiple times before I didn’t get the error message. It finally went through at 12:17 pm.

I imagine this coin could be worth a lot in 70. the 1995-w proof goes for thousands in a high grade. 500$ probably not a bad investment to get many times that return in the coming years.

I have been a loyal mint customer for 15 years plus signed up for automatic shipments of the silver eagle program. No luck ordering on line refresh, refresh 15 times , then at 12 21 currently unavailable. Call the mint busy till 115 pm .I was told to sign up a email when more would be available . 30,000 was the mintage do they, the mint, want me to believe their will be more made. They said the web couldn’t handle the volume, Amazon can. Figure it out are you will have no customers.

For every other coin or product you order, your card info comes up and you do not have to retype it in. Once you have a coin in the cart, there is no way you should be blown out because you have a line established. For this to happen it seems that there is some type of program that someone developed to knock out your card info and keeping you busy to keep retyping it in. I was surprised to see the PayPal option removed. Luckily I had my CC on auto fill on my computer. After I couple of refreshes I had it. And, I just received my confirmation email. Life is good.

Seems odd that, if you got one, it happened around the 12:15 time frame. Is that when their servers finally were able to catch up? Also, the people that got +1 by hiring others should have them all taken away. They are immoral cheaters and a stain on the hobby.
It was a total waste of my time. I was able to load one in the cart and get to the payment screen but then the error messages kept coming until the item is no longer available.

As I understand it this coin was available from all 3 of the mints retail stores. I called last week and was told online only. But I think the mint made them available for some reason. I was always told when you have an item with a limited mintage you could only buy online. Probably a lot were sold there today and a chunk at the baltimore show.
The whole thing became a total fiasco. Therefore, the Mint should simply cancel all orders, rebuild the website software and phone systems, and try again.

As to them not being sold out, that part is sorta true. There may be a couple hundred coins available tomorrow when the orders are reconciled but it’s unlikely that most people will see the option to buy them during the brief few moments when the mint website shows them as available.
My boyfriend and I were both trying for one. I got mine after MANY error messages but he didn’t get his. I lied and said I didn’t get one. I hope he likes his Christmas gift 🙂

This has been great a great discussion. I have no problem not acquiring one from the Mint website; my issue was that if I was able to put it in the “bag” there shouldn’t be any issues “Checking Out.”
Absolutely agreed if the item is in your car it should not be available in inventory like a rat race to the finish line. It timed out several times on the main page, the order confirmation page, and the payment page, but after what seemed like a 100 refreshes, my order was placed!
The new U.S. Mint Director David J. Ryder made a very bad decision to have these very limited edition coins for sale at the Mint’s 3 gift shops (D.C., Philadelphia & Denver) & at the Whitman coin show in Baltimore, Maryland today! That took a lot of coins off the Mint’s website even before sales online began at noon Eastern time. Very unfair practice Mr. Ryder! Get your act together Mr. Mint Director or Trump might say “You’re Fired!”

I can’t remember being so pissed off at a coin release..Been bugging me all day since 9am ….to have it in your basket…having the site crash multiple times….all the way to final review….and THEN go unavailable….because of issues on THEIR end…. that’s a serious problem and some really bad public relations.
I’ve read that it was announced that the mint gift shops would have them but that they changed their mind and that the mint shops DID NOT have them and that the Boston show only had 500.

It took 5 hrs and 17 min to get ahold of what the mint calls customer service, maybe I should say “no customer service”.
Told them that after 254 orders since 2008, I want to be removed from the mints list.

Disgusted with the mint…. I was on at 12pm and the system kept crashing and was unable to get one for myself after the fact they took all my information and credit card information. A total scam..
The Mint knew the demand for this coin was going to be sky high and also that their server would not he able to handle the traffic. These coins should never hve been offered for sale online. There should have been some sort of lottery for these special coins. I finally gave up crash after crash and continuous busy signals on the phone. So disappointed to miss out. Guess I’ll have all of them except this one. Won’t pay the ridiculous prices people are wanting.
lottery actually presents more opportunity for cooking the books. if all people have to do is send in their name and address then there will be hundreds of thousands of entries as everyone and their mother looks at it as a lottery ticket. there really is no good way to do this. the problem is with PFS buying clubs and deal sites that promote these as ways to make a quick buck among people who have no idea what a silver eagle is
The process I was thinking of would be that you would be required to setup an account with the Mint via the website. Then place a preorder for the coin for which your order no. would be your lottery number. In this manner the Mint could verify that only a single order was being placed by a household and that the account address could be verified as a residence and not a business. I would suggest buyers should also have to show up in person to the Mint nearest to them, bring a photo ID and attest that they will not resell this coin for at least 2 years from the date of purchase. Their information should be documented. This is a special coin and special measures should have been taken.
I am disgusted by this release and they are not enforcing policy because my nephews girlfriend who has no clue what this coin is was able to obtain two ,Using the same bank card and her address and her mothers address. You have to wonder how someone on EBAY has a notification by their ad “10 sold” when you can get only one.
If you send in a check with it like we use to before the internet, it worked fine. If you eliminate credit you will see how many people come up with the cash, especially on the more costly coins. Buy on credit, flip on
e bay for ten times so what it is worth and have your money in hand before your bank sends you your statement. Great racket. I will take my chances with everyone else win or lose. Every person has the same chance and I don’t have to be frustrated for 15 or 20 minutes.

Nothing to add. Just wanted to vent to some folks that might be able to sympathize. Had the exact same issue: in the cart, nearly 20 mins of “oops, something went wrong”, then it was gone. Just sucks that the people who just want one for their collection, NOT to resell, can’t have one. I’m certainly not gonna pay thousands of dollars for one later. I missed the pride of two nation’s the first time around, but was able to get one after them being initially unavailable. Maybe something like that will happen this time.
Ah, I had the coin in my basket promptly at noon but could never get past the very last part to ‘confirm order’ – it kept resetting. Eventually it said that the item in my basket was no longer available and I should remove it.
So, too bad not getting this but there is NO WAY I will go secondary for this, unless of course I could get it for less than $70 or so. It’s nice to have, but I will survive just fine without it.
Boycott this coin , kill the value and keep it at bay . This was a scam set for dealers . Dealers were using multiple prepaid cards and addresses. I personally know somebody that was able to order to two separate addresses with the same check card . Multiple PO Boxes also used. I experienced the same issues everyone here experienced but somehow managed to get confirmation from the mint that I will receive one. Not sure if this makes a difference, but I also ordered the 2019 Proof Set at the same time. Perhaps that made a difference. I plan on sending the reverse proof coin to PCGS, but wondering how that will work with two orders ending up in the original sealed government packaging. I guess I’ll find out.

For everybody that had a coin in their cart and they were checking out I think it is time to start contacting the BBB and FTC about this.
Otherwise everybody that had a coin in their cart should have their transaction honored or a complete cancellation and rerelease of this coin. A recall and re-release would also add to the whole story of this coin and make it even more desirable
APMEX has 70’s with 4 different holders listed.
Once again the mint has dumped on collectors to enrich the corporate coin dealers and flippers. This was a contrived rarity from the beginning. Knowing the collector base for this is at least 75,000 this was a scam. I have been increasingly put out with the Mint’s abuse of its collector base and this is it for me.
Better yet, I plan to contact Treasury’s IG.

I think the major point here being missed is…if you have it in your cart and you are on the final review screen…like i was… the sale should go through…the site was having sooo many issues it crashed…and left us with the coin in our cart stating it was no longer available. that is what many of us find completely unacceptable….If you are going to put out a product in limited issue, you better have the software and systems in place to handle the traffic you KNOW will occur. Complete fiasco and public relations disaster.

After I calmed down, I started laughing because I thought to myself who would be crazy enough to by this coin for $2300 bucks as per some of the Ebay listings. It would probably take 50 to 100 years for that coin to approach that value. If ever.

That’s true (which it might), that’s with any ASE you may have not that the collectible value went up but only the melt value.

I too hope to pick one up later at a reasonable cost. Then the 95-W will be the only one (proof or rev-proof) I wont have, to date. I recently did that for a few coins I let slip by years ago, to get (almost) complete. I though the odds would be low in getting one (I was thinking a million people would be after this at this price – so 3% chance, but I see in other replies thats not as conservative as I thought). 30,000 pieces minted will never be cheap. I don’t foresee the price getting below $500 ever in my opinion and that’s for a raw coin. One at a PF70 may never get below $800.

Your observations are right on spot! The U.S. Mint’s customer list has dropped from about 1.2 million people in 2014 down to 500,000 last year in 2018!
The market is dying a slow death unfortunately.

Sometimes I don’t agree with your input Seth, but totally support your position on this one, just sent my thoughts to the email address you provided.
I definitely agree with sending emails, but have also gone a step further. Send hand written or typed letters with all information. Send them so they have to be signed for by the recipient with a return slip to you by the USPS for your records. I also agree with whoever said a class action lawsuit should be filed. If anything it would get the answers we coin collectors deserve, and bring the changes we want to see, as well as put the greedy big boys out of business. I for one am up for that! The mint should make everyone fill out a form saying you won’t sell it on ebay like Hess did in 2018 for the 85th anniversary Hess truck.
What i have really noticed are how many ungrateful, angry people there are in this community. Any website no matter how good it is maintained will crash when 100’s of thousands of people are logging on to buy the same exact thing. hackers do it all the time to crash websites. For those that got one, congrats (i got one), and yes, i am not happy how it went down, but its part of the game. if you do not like it, get out of the coin game.
