US Mint Sales: 2019 Palladium Eagle Debuts

The United States Mint introduced last week two products for collectors, the 2019 San Antonio Missions Quarter Three Coin Set and the 2019-W Reverse Proof American Palladium Eagle.

Issued Thursday, Sept. 12, the premium Palladium Eagle was the most sought, posting four-day sales of 16,690 for 55.6% of the maximum 30,000.

Released Tuesday, Sept. 10, the San Antonio Missions three-coin set includes uncirculated quarters struck at the Philadelphia and Denver Mints and a proof quarter produced at the San Francisco Mint. It registered six-day sales of 11,458 for the quickest start among series issues since 2016.

As comparisons, the past thirteen sets opened with sales of:

11,264 sets for the War in the Pacific in Guam
10,585 sets for American Memorial Park in Northern Mariana Islands,
10,668 sets for Lowell National Historical Park in Massachusetts,
10,176 sets for Pictured Rocks in Michigan,
10,508 sets for George Rogers Clark in Indiana,
10,513 sets for Ellis Island in New Jersey,
9,821 sets for Ozark Riverways in Missouri,
9,415 sets for Frederick Douglass National Historic Site in DC,
9,413 sets for Effigy Mounds National Monument in Iowa,
10,261 sets for the Fort Moultrie in South Carolina,
10,030 sets for the Theodore Roosevelt National Park in North Dakota,
9,723 sets for Harpers Ferry National Historical Park of West Virginia, and
9,638 sets for Cumberland Gap National Historical Park of Kentucky.

The set was the Mint’s second strongest seller.

In its latest report, the U.S. Mint published sales data for 176 numismatic products. Not counting the new products so as to compare apples to apples, 56 outperformed their prior weekly gains compared to 70 previously. Using the same criteria, 5 products increased by more than 1,000 units against 7 previously.

Finally, 5 products saw a sales reduction compared to none in the prior report. Notably, the 2019 Pride of Two Nations Two-Coin Set dropped 640 to 99,094.

Four day sales of 16,690 gives you a pretty good idea of what the actual demand is for this type of release. Certainly not 30,000.

It is getting Less and Less Likely that there will be a $50 price increase on the 2019 Reverse Proof Palladium this afternoon…
