Today, Aug. 29, the United States Mint launched another collector product that commemorates San Antonio Missions National Historical Park in Texas. On Monday, the agency issued quarters emblematic of the national park. Its release today features the same design but in a much larger format — a three-inch coin struck in five ounces of 99.9% fine silver.
The U.S. Mint’s 2019-P San Antonio Missions Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coin went on sale today at noon EDT for $154.95.
Limited to 20,000 pieces, the silver coin’s vapor blasted uncirculated finish is produced at the U.S. Mint facility in Philadelphia. It is the 49th issue from the Mint’s series of America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Uncirculated Coins™ which, like the companion quarter program, honors a different site of national interest in each state, the District of Columbia and U.S. Territory.
Silver Coin Designs and Specifications
Paying tribute to the missions, the new coin’s reverse depicts elements of the Spanish Colonial Real. Within the quadrants are symbols of the missions:
- wheat symbolizes farming;
- the arches and bell symbolize community;
- a lion represents Spanish cultural heritage; and
- a symbol of the San Antonio River represents irrigation methods and life-sustaining resources.
This design was created by U.S. Mint AIP member Chris Costello and sculpted by U.S. Mint Chief Engraver Joe Menna.
Encircling the four quadrants are the inscriptions "SAN ANTONIO MISSIONS," "TEXAS," "2019," and "E PLURIBUS UNUM."
As with quarters, its five-ounce obverse carry John Flanagan’s portrait of George Washington. The likeness of the first President of the United States made its inaugural appearance on the 1932 circulating quarter-dollar and has appeared on them ever since.
Inscriptions are also the same on larger five-ounce obverses, reading: "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "LIBERTY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "QUARTER DOLLAR."
In addition, each has a ‘P mint mark on the obverse identifies its production at the Philadelphia Mint.
In other design elements, each coin has a flat edge with an edge inscription reading: "999 FINE SILVER 5.0 OUNCE."

I’m thinking this one might turn out to be the low mintage key of the series. Blah design and with all the products the Mint is putting out this year I bet this one gets forgotten – except for the hard core ATB 5 oz collectors that need to keep their series complete – like me 😐
Interesting thought. I too collect them. I think this coin design is perfect given the political climate and boarder/immigration issues. Just food for thought. Really do not want to have discussion about it. Thxs
