i unfortunately collect Kennedy's .they only make 10 different ones a year. The Kennedy rocket ship coin.. circulated PL coins can be hard and expensive to find.. i removed the best looking Kennedy from the set and sent it to N#C . i received a PL 67 D mint slab . . And happy to add it to my set. There is no mention off the rocket ship set on the slab. .. circulated PL Kennedy's can be found . . . .

I thought the March 10th numbers @ - (negative) 120 was bad. That's nothing: 'March 17 sales figures' shows that the sales dropped another 1,340 coins!
So far I have gotten one of the 5 oz coins. I ordered one about 5 hours after the noon sales started and I got that coin a couple of weeks ago. 24 hours after the coin initially went on sale I backordered another coin with no sign of that one yet. I then backordered another coin each week for 3 weeks. This puts me at having 4 coins back-ordered and I am really debating on what I should do. I understand why the numbers are dropping as everyone is tired of waiting and it looks like it might not be wise to buy many of the coins.
It's a great coin though and I still think that it might have potential years on down the road. ESPECIALLY if they stop selling them at year-end and the mintage ends up at 60,000 or less. I've looked and haven't found an article anywhere about the 5 oz coin sales and the dropping number.
No article about the odd finish on the rocketship kennedy half dollar, either. If a magazine or coin blog would publish real news on the questions people have that enterprise would do well.

Well written, Rodney.

The US Mint messed up. The quiet after the storm, will cause an enormous cancellation of the Back Ordered 5 oz coins.

If the production number was 50,000, they would have Sold Out.

I just looked at the US Mint Cumulative Sales Figures page and it looks like the number of the Apollo 11 5-oz coins sold has dropped by 120 coins instead of increasing.
Since the mint has been selling about 100 of these a week, they must have gotten well over 200 returns/cancels in the past week in order for the sales total to drop by 120!
It would be interesting to know how much of the return number is actually coins being physically sent back to the mint and how many are just where people are canceling their back-ordered coins?
I do think they have really messed up the launch of the Apollo 11 coins. They should have waited until they had many 5 oz coins minted before the launch since back-order status pretty much squashes any chance of a sell-out. The 5-ounce is a fantastic coin but because of the way the mint has handled the sales the investment potential has been greatly diminished due to back orders.
Question: At the end of the year, won't this coin be pulled and sales stopped at the end of the 2019 year? If that happens then the final mintage might be 70,000 or less.
Chris mentioned that the Mint should be worried about the coins that will be "returned", they should also be worried about the number of back-orders that gets cancelled before shipment. As people see how slow the sales are and how little resale potential the coin has there will probably be many more people cancelling their orders!

Seth, You say the Kennedy in the Mint's 2019 Rocketship set is officially called an "enhanced Reverse Proof" finish by the mint but I don't believe that is the case. The Apollo 11 set has that title and that finish, but the Rocketship Kennedy coin is described by the mint as simply "uncirculated" with no other description that I can find anywhere. And believe me, I have looked, since I collect Kennedy halves with a passion. Did you mistakenly type "Rocketship" in the above post, or did I miss something about the finish on the Rocketship set?
Also please note, in looking at the certificate on the back of the Rocketship set that I got, it just says "uncirculated". Please see my other comments about this coin in response to Gary (and before I saw your comment).
Respectfully,
Rodney
