U.S. Mint Launches Glow-In-The-Dark Rocketship For Young Collectors

Gift-givers have a new option for budding young collectors with the United States Mint’s release today of the 2019 Rocketship.

Included in this new collectible are two coins attached to a card shaped like a rocketship. The standable card glows in the dark, adding another fun element for kids.

"Two of our Mighty Minters™, Timothy and Layla, will help kids ages 7 – 12 as they ‘blast off’ into the exciting world of coin collecting," the Mint describes. "To activate the glow-in-the-dark feature, place Rocketship in direct sunlight for about five minutes. Then take it into a dark room and watch it glow."

The two coins of the 2019 Rocketship include an uncirculated 2019-D Kennedy half dollar and a proof 2019-S Native American dollar which honors American Indians in the Space Program.

The half dollar is attached to the rocketship card in the lower compartment. It was chosen because the former U.S. President shown on the coin is John F. Kennedy — a man seen as instrumental to the growth of the U.S. space program.

Above the 50c is the $1 coin featuring Mary Golda Ross, the first known Native American female engineer. (The U.S. Mint recently started selling rolls and bags of these dollars in regular circulating quality.) Space is a fitting theme for the dollar as the Mint earlier released 2019 Apollo 11 Commemorative Coins that celebrate the 50th anniversary of the first manned Moon landing.

One more compartment on the rocketship is left blank so young collectors can add their own coin to the rocketship.

Add $4.95 shipping on that and it comes to $14.95 Is it worth it?

charlie

however if you have already made your 3 qualifying orders this year then you qualified for themints loyalty program so your basic $4.95 is deducted as it will be for the remainder of 2019

Ozzie

Good to know, Thank You!

The free budget shipping under the Loyalty Program isn’t automatic. I qualify but they don’t have it programmed correctly. I called last Friday and had them place the order and it charged shipping so the lady said they would check on it, the order shows “processing” so they haven’t fixed it yet. Just to check I just placed another order but it still isn’t correct so I didn’t complete the order.

I got my notice this morning about free shipping!!

I order all of my coins online and it is always automatic. Sorry you had an issue, Carl.

I’m going to contact Mr. Michael White of the US Mint to see if he can hopefully get the problem with the free budget shipping for the Loyalty Program corrected. I was a programmer 25 years ago and it shouldn’t be difficult to fix in a few minutes.

It’s a great idea to issue a set of coins for kids 🙂 I hope it attracts young people to become numismatists. This set will appear in the colnect coin catalog soon.

Total sales for the Rocketship Coins stand at 17,825 according to the US Mint.

The item is now sold out

Very low sales figure for sure for a cheap set marketed towards young collectors. Sadly, this hobby has a very high average age of collectors & very few under 18 years old. But, kudos to the Mint for trying!

Just received my sets of rocket ship coins. Checked the 2019 Kennedy halves and they may very well be Proof like. Mine are beautiful no nicks no bag marks just beautiful coins. If they are in fact PL I wish the mint would put out a statement to that effect. Some of the TPG are grading them proof like.

Hello all. I have 5 sets of the rocketship sets in OGP. I see prices on the coins in this set graded. Going for high prices. Is or would it be worth getting my sets graded?

bobby p

i collect Kennedy’s.i haven’t seen a set that the Kennedy wouldn’t get a PL?.Almost always i believe. You i want graded. Buy graded.. but i made an exception on this coin. i sent one Kennedy.in. the coins i have the most trouble with are slabbed P n Ds in a high grade. i removed my space ship Kennedy from its pack. and received a D mint PL 67. with no mention off it cumming from the space ship set. . Finding P n Ds in a PL slab can be difficult and expensive to find.
