CCAC to Review Designs for American Innovation $1 Coin

4

CCACThe Citizens Coinage Advisory Committee (CCAC) will hold a teleconference meeting on Tuesday, July 31, to review and discuss candidate designs for a 2018 $1 coin that will kick off a new collector series authorized by the American Innovation $1 Coin Act.

The Act was signed into law (Public Law No: 115-197) on July 20, 2018. It authorizes a 14-year program of $1 coins to honor American innovation in each of the 50 states, the District of Columbia, and the five U.S. territories — the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico, Guam, American Samoa, the United States Virgin Islands, and the Commonwealth of the Northern Mariana Islands.

These new dollars will debut in 2019 with four unique designs released each year until the end of the program in 2033. The Act also provides an option, which the U.S. Mint is taking, to strike an American Innovation $1 coin for 2018 as a way to introduce the series.

The design for the obverse (heads side) of the 2018-dated dollar will depict a likeness of the Statue of Liberty that extends to the coin’s rim and is large enough to provide a dramatic representation of Liberty. Required inscriptions include "$1" and "In God We Trust."

Its reverse (tails side) will carry inscriptions of "United States of America" and "American Innovators" and feature a representation of the signature of President George Washington on the first United States patent issued. That patent, X000001, was issued on July 31, 1790, to Samuel Hopkins for an improvement in the making of pot ash and pearl ash.

The dollar’s edge will be incused with the year "2018," a mint mark, and the inscription "E Pluribus Unum."

Meeting Time and Calling Options

The CCAC meeting begins at 1:00 p.m. and is scheduled to last until 3:00 p.m. (EST). Interested members of the public may dial in to listen by calling (866) 564-9287 and using Access Code: 62956028. This teleconference is "listen only." No comments or questions will be taken during the meeting.

In addition, anyone interested in submitting ideas for the CCAC’s consideration may fax them to 202-756-6525.

Once the design is approved for this initial release in 2018, hopefully there will be enough time for the US Mint to issue a P, D & S uncirculated, an enhanced uncirculated, a regular proof, and a reverse proof. Not to mention a First Day Cover…

Some people either in the Congress or at the Mint are not doing their Math right. If they issue 4 coins per year starting in 2019, then the 14-year program should end in 2032 not 2033.

Or maybe it’s the author of this article? Usually legislation like this allows for additional states if they happen to be admitted during the program, and therefore extend the program without specifying an end date.
