Well, I stand corrected - Congress has finally approved somebody as Director of the Mint. We still have to wait and see if this re-run director will do any more than just respond to counterfeiting concerns and otherwise let bygones be bygones.
jim -

We got a U.S. Mint Director on Wednesday, March 21, after a 7 year vacancy. He is a great guy! (David J. Ryder). I met him once at a ANA coin show at the Mint booth back in the day when he was a recess appointment as U.S
Mint Director by Bush (not confirmed by Senate, under the recess appointment power of the President, but with full title & pay). He did very well during his very short time in the office & is a numismatist! Thank G-D! Amen! PTL!

Old Collector -
I'm guessing you haven't seen first hand the job that Ottawa does with their highlighting on special coins. It's not gaudy but tastefully done. Of course there's no guarantee that the US Mint would do as good a job and they seem unwilling to try - perhaps because of the outrageous mintages that Congress imposes on these collector coins. But then again if the US Mint were to put out some truly beautiful coins with today's technology there would likely be a real demand for those coins beyond that of the traditional coin collectors'.

Whatever, you will continue to have your desires met because the US Mint continues to show little initiative either in its designs or implementations and that won't change as long as it is "managed" by the SES seat warmers required by Congress' inability to approve an official Director with real responsibilities.

Jim - I fully agree. The US mint should have added a rose gold highlight to the silver coins for more eye appeal, gosh knows they are gonna have a surplus of rose gold to do the job.

It's too bad the mint couldn't take a hint from at least Ottawa and put a little gold plate highlight on the silver coin to spruce up the coin some. Having a total white background with a little pink gold plating like on the butterfly and/or the ribbon would make the coin much more attractive to the eye. But then this is the US Mint whose best designs come from 100 years ago. And Congress is so old and staid and without imagination they can't ask the mint to provide such improvements either.

Old Collector - I agree that not all minted coins will come out a pr or ms 70, that can never be obtained. Most collector do not have the education or training to grade coins 68-69-70 as it takes years to prefect the art. I am in the process of learning myself. Coins are graded not only by the naked eye but also 5x magnification. If a proof gold coin is delivered with a visible scratch in the field / to the naked eye, the coin needs to be returned. We spend our hard earned dollars to purchase coins and if the mint cannot ensure quality of their product than returns will happen. I would never advise a collector to keep any gold proof coin with flaws to the naked eye.

The mint is trying to crack down on flippers not honest coin collectors that expect and deserve the highest quality of product.

Old Collector - It will be easy for the mint to pin point those who try and take advantage of the return policy. Buy 20 coins, return ten...easy to spot. There are some collectors that do have the right to return proof based coins that do not fit that bill. Returns are the cost of doing business and those of us that purchase coins with our hard earned dollars deserve the highest quality of product possible.

The rose gold coins are still selling, slowly, but still selling. Silver ones on the other hand appear to be an epic fail. Sad as silver sales should always crush gold sales due to a much lower affordable cost. That's what the mint gets for releasing silver proof coins not at a four 9's quality. The collector market has spoken loud and clear....four 9's only, the US mint needs to absorb this. Time will tell.
