Changes in precious metals futures ranged from a loss of 0.3% for palladium to an increase of 0.1% for platinum

Precious metals futures registered slight changes Wednesday. Gold edged up from a near three-week low while silver settled down for a fourth straight session.

Gold for December delivery rose 70 cents, or less 0.1%, to settle at $1,279 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"Gold prices were ending the U.S. day session with slight gains and erased earlier losses," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc., said in a daily note. "A solid down day for U.S. stock indexes helped to lift the gold market back into positive territory on the day."

Gold futures traded from a low of $1,272 to a high of $1,280.40. They lost 0.2% on Tuesday — ending at their worst point since Oct. 6, and climbed 40 cents in their start to the week on Monday

Meanwhile, silver for December delivery declined 4.1 cents, or 0.2%, to close at $16.925 an ounce. The settlement is the lowest since Oct. 6 when the metal ended at $16.79 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $16.81 to $17.05. They declined 0.6% in the previous session and shed less than a half cent on Monday.

  • Palladium for December delivery lost $3.10, or 0.3%, to $958.10 an ounce, ranging from $948.35 to $967.45.
