The U.S. Mint on Oct. 9 will unveil winning designs from its WWI silver dollar design competition

Designs for commemorative coins recognizing the 100th anniversary of America’s involvement in World War I will be unveiled Monday, Oct. 9, in Washington, D.C. The date coincides with the opening day of the Association of the United States Army (AUSA) Annual Meeting and Exposition at the Walter E. Washington Convention Center.

In 2018, and as directed by Public Law 113-212, the United States Mint will produce and sell up to 350,000 World War I American Veterans Centennial Silver Dollars in collector qualities of proof and uncirculated.

The soon to be revealed designs came about from a two-phased competition process. Phase one consisted of opening the contest to interested artists. Phase two narrowed the competition field with 20 chosen entrants submitting their commemorative designs and plasters. These designs where then judged by an expert jury.

Participants at the design unveiling ceremony will include:

  • Thomas Johnson, Chief of Corporate Communications, United States Mint
  • Ryan McCarthy, Under Secretary of the Army
  • Col. Robert J. Dalessandro, USA (Ret.), Chairman, U.S. World War I Centennial Commission

The event’s time and location details follow:
