Precious metals logged narrow changes Thursday, Sept. 28

Precious metals futures were little changed Thursday. Gold, silver and platinum did close higher for the first time since Monday, while palladium advanced for a third session in a row.

Gold for December delivery inched up 90 cents, or 0.07%, to settle at $1,288.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. The yellow metal has been bruised by a strengthening U.S. dollar, opined analysts.

"We expect the dollar to continue to recover, which will probably weigh on gold, silver and platinum prices," Bloomberg News quoted ABN Amro Bank NV analyst Georgette Boele said in a note to clients.

Gold futures traded from a low of $1,280.40 to a high of $1,290.70. They lost 1.1% in the previous session — ending at their lowest price since Aug. 16, fell 0.8% on Tuesday, and advanced 1.1% on Monday.

Silver for December delivery added 2 cents, or 0.1%, to close at $16.847 an ounce. Silver futures ranged between $16.70 and $16.89. They declined 0.3% on Wednesday — marking their lowest settlement since Aug. 15, dropped 1.5% on Tuesday, and gained 1% on Monday.

In rounding out precious metals dealings:

  • January platinum added 20 cents, or 0.02%, to $925.70 an ounce, trading between $918.10 and $929.40.

  • Palladium for December delivery added $2.35, or 0.25%, to $927.85 an ounce, ranging from $924.10 to $937.15.
