United States Mint sales of the 225th anniversary 2017 Enhanced Uncirculated Coin Set are swinging up and down as apparent returns and cancellations outweigh new orders.

Figures released Aug. 20 by the U.S. Mint showed their sales at 211,273 sets, representing a decline of 12,037 sets from a week earlier when the Mint reported selling 223,310 sets. The Mint allotted 225,000 sets — a total that pays tribute to the agency’s 225th anniversary.

Meanwhile, sales of the 20th anniversary 2017-W Proof American Platinum Eagle declined for a second week in a row, down 181 coins after falling by 209 coins previously. The Mint’s latest figures place it at 8,836 coins. Its stated mintage limit is 10,000 coins. The proof Platinum Eagle is available from the Mint at the time of this writing, priced at $1,350.

coinstar

as of right now the in stock number is 5,200. looks like the mint will reduce the final mintage of this set from 225,000 to 219,000 and will destroy 6,000 damaged sets

Joe C.

Disappointed with my enhanced sets. I was expecting more of a contrast between surfaces. Looks like the coins were all sandblasted, but I will keep the sets because they are still different from normal sets.

Ken T

coinstar–
If I am understanding your comment, does this mean that the Mint sold over 2500 sets in the last three days?

coinstar

on 8/20 the in stock number jumped up to 7,700. in reality it should of jumped up 13,737 if they plan on keeping the 225,000 mintage. what this means to me is the mint is not going to replace 6,000 damaged sets as of right now. currently showing 4,952 in stock

coinstar

did you keep your sets?

coinstar

I could be wrong the mint is free to raise their in stock number whenever they want , but I got a gut feeling they don’t want to mess with the damage returns

coinstar

it’s more of a matt finish, the JFK in the set looks like the 1998 matt half, I have both

Ken T

I kept my sets. Anytime you have a Lincoln cent with a mintage of 225,000, you have a winner..

coinstar

absolutely, a no brainer. going to get some of mine graded also

coinstar

this is something I have never seen before, a coin set that has sold about 3,000 sets on e bay and not one single set has went below issue price and the set hasn’t even sold out yet

coinstar

could very well be over 3,000 sets, just guessing, but I know one seller who sold over 500 sets already

Ken T

I think a year from now we are looking at a $50 set. We have 10 unique coins. Would have been more valuable if they were silver.

Lee

Lowest mintage on the coins for all the denominations (except the 1998-S Matte JFK). Why would people NOT want to keep them? Mintages are lower than a lot of key coins on other sets.

EG. Where else can you get a dime more rare than the 1916-D Merc for so little?

coinstar

there are a lot of people who don’t know this set even exists yet

Jason

I received mine this week, have to say they don’t have the look I was expecting. They look whizzed.

coinstar

got some bad news.. mint just raised in stock number to 9.573 this morning, no sellout until sometime in September unless someone buys big bulk

Ed

Coinstar, like you said on the first comment of this post, at some point USMINT will be cutting final mintage of this set from 225,000 to 219,000 and will destroy 6,000 damaged sets. It does not look good on them to keep getting all these returns. Just my opinion.

Kevin

Speculators bought these and returned alot of them. Apparently the big money flip wasnt going to happen.

Ken T

coinstar,
I think this foolishness will go on for months. I have never seen something sell out in MINUTES and come and go for WEEKS.

coinstar

not only does it look bad for the mint, it comes down to the bottom line. they are burning up hundred’s of man hours dealing with all these returns. it’s costing them thousands of dollars and all their resources

coinstar

yeah, I have never seen anything like this either.I guess a bright spot in all of this is we will get a lower mintage from this set and it looks like more than 6,000 now

coinstar

the mint really messed up this issue, if they would of put a household limit on these sets for the first week and then took it off after a week they would of sold out by now

Ken T

The mint always takes flack for these 5 or 10 minute sell-outs, but refuses to address the issue.

Tinto

Well according to a Coin World article sales as of Aug 24th are at 189,089 sets. More hurried returns …. from would be flippers, big boy buyers … ?? And isn’t there a deadline for returns?? Or did these big boy buyers get a special enhanced deadline for their returns?

http://www.coinworld.com/news/us-coins/2017/08/enhanced-uncirculated-set-sales-continue-plummet.html#

Joe Brown

?,i have to ask, i sea the word ”DAMAGED” sets, did our U.S. Mint say anything about the 225*th Ann. Enhanced Unc. sets that are returned being damaged.

coinstar

yet the in stock number is now down to 8,900, which means we are now looking at a total mintage of under 200,000 I was actually thinking about buying more sets. with the lower mintage

coinstar

I seen a graded sp-70 cent sell for 96 dollars just a few days ago. the raw cents are now up to 12 dollars

Charles from Florida

Recieved my set last week on Wednesday or so about the 23rd of August. and sure nuff the Native American dollar has some kind of little speck of black goop on the edge of the reverse. Must have been a set that was previouosly returned? I think I will keep it though as the other coins look okay, and may order another set.
Under a loop the coins look really cool and a whole lot nicer than regular issue. We may have a winner here.

Joe Brown

so its the black goop, thank you. it happens.

gary

be careful with that black goop it was developed by the engineers, and you seen what happened to them

Chas Barber

Chas & joe, I got black good in 90% of my sets, some posters say it’s air, I opened it- not air as Grandma would say “It’s schmutz” i.e. dirt, unwanted bs in holder, been buying mint stuff for over 50 years, this is the first group full og scmutz…returns, does the mint care? I don’t waste time returning the sets, foolish but WTF is up @ the mint, their sales, marketing, product & planning are about as good as a screen door in a submarine..etc…..

Seth Riesling

The black goop is die set-up grease from the coinage press machine that is used to lubricate the press. It is supposed to be cleaned off the machine before striking coins by the press operator Oops!

-NumisDudeTx

Stephen

I noticed with my sets you can really see dark spots through the plastic looks like glue residue holding the plastic together. I think they could have one a better job with these special sets. When my sets arrives most of the boxes were bent on the edges when you sell them to collectors in the future you will lose money or hear a bunch of crap about the sets being damaged. More care needs to be given when shipping any set in the mail.

Joe Brown

just my opinion , like Seth said, the goop is die set – up grease from the coin press machine to lube the press. Maybe our mint should pay a few hours overtime to the press operaters to maintain the equipment better, when the push is on. There might not be enough time in their shift. But that,s up to management.

Chris

On 2 of my sets there are brown splotches, just a bit darker than the penny on them, does anyone know what this is and has this been an issue for anyone else.

sc Mac

Mis-information and outright lies on HSN again. Moron Mike and Trump should get a room. Just as Mikie keeps saying the 2016-W Proof ASE is the rarest because it happened to be stuffed into a Congratulations cardboard folder. Also claims the Mint sold-out of the 2017-S UC enhanced set in 4 minutes, also says the only other Enhanced Dime is in the March of Dimes set, wrong….It contains the Silver Proof Dime, and a Reverse Proof Dime , Watch HSN for the Comedic appeal not the Coins.
