Whoops! Last sentence should read... In today's market, does gold get a higher value based on pure speculation or is gold more acceptable to buy stuff if the world economy went south?

Thanks again for the update Seth. Here's another ? for you. Back in the 80's platinum'value was a lot higher than gold. Why? Pure speculation or is gold more acceptable to buy stuff if the world economy went south?

Silver investment is just the poor mans gold. Other countries battling now slowly rising inflation still amass gold frantically. The U.S. with world reserve fiat, not so much. We went through a deflationary time, now TPTB are I guess working on a reflationary move as many are not happy with i.e. the price of oil, but RE is back But, they shoot themselves in the foot with such cheap borrowing costs it's cheap to borrow and build. Upcoming rate hikes are negligible, we may see another quarter point this year. It might just be that discretionary income is falling because PM's are the last thing I get to spend money on. Also, the prices are mostly flat, not so much a desirable investment. A whole lot of physical demand occurred since our last recession, some of it is going to hit the streets eventually, when it does we know the economy is starting to slowly falter.

The coin hobby took a big hit back in 1980 when silver hit a record high of about $50.35 & gold hit a record high of $850 & then both dropped very quickly, leaving many dealers with silver & gold coins that they had to take a big loss on. Some dealers went out of business then.
We didn't have slabs with all the numerical grades in MS back then, usually just MS- 60 (a low level Unc coin) & MS-65 (as a high level Unc coin). MS-63 was used as the in between grade & that was basically it back then. No 69 or 70 grades were given back then since it was unheard of! Things really changed in 1986 when PCGS started slabbing coins & using all grades from 1 to 70.

Happy collecting Robert!

TY Seth. Like successful investors always say; "Buy low, sell high!" Dang it, I have to remember that for the future for bullion. :) The cycles of life.... 20% less in sales is huge. BTW, I can't remember since I wasn't collecting (except for kids!) during the 80's...Did the value of collectable coins take a beating when AG went from $60.00/oz (thanks Hunt bros) back to $5.00? I'm guessing it did. But back then there weren't so many MS grades. I always wished that I could afford a BU coin. Now it's between MS 60 -70. Amazing to me as I try to learn more about this hobby.

One of the top silver investment analyst companies has just released a study that predicts silver investments by Americans to drop 20% this year to a 10-year low!
The very low sales of the Mint's silver bullion version coins to their Authorized Purchasers in the first 6 months of this year seems to be some proof of that prediction.

TY for the update. The predictions for AU & AG prices over the next several months gives one pause on purchasing bullion. Those upcoming rate hikes will cause some impacts. Inflation is going to be ugly someday and then there is our $20 Trillion Fed. debt. No clue on how this all plays out.
