I’m wondering if this is going to end up being a key date? I know they didn’t start selling them until the end of the year and then I read that the mint quite making them in December. I think they started producing them in June and stopped in December. I suppose they could have made just as many as usual provided that they didn’t have production and/or quality problems. But that’s a question mark. I know that for most of the modern coins that the value can DROP instead of rise, but I think that this is one coin that will be worth investing in in quantity. If the orange triangular “LIMITED ” warning comes up on the mint website anytime soon I think that I will buy as many as I can afford to. But if it doesn’t show as limited before October or November then I’d maybe take that as a sign that they made as many as usual.
Of course, I don’t know a whole lot about how everything works but I’m working on learning.

In the US mint website states “no mintage limit” on these coins. They usually continue to sell them as long as they want or until they need to start striking new 2018s or 2019s ASEs, the mintage is then announced after the mint stop selling these and they recount how many were sold in total.

In reply to Robert F Hall. Well, I supposed I should have asked does anyone know how many they struck that is available for sale? I didn't think the definition of mintage was how many have sold so far. What is the term for the number that they have struck then?

That number is just a sales number and just shows how many has sold so far. You can (probably) tell the mintage for past years in cases where the mint doesn’t have them for sale any longer but the 2016 is still being offered for sale.
Does anyone know what the mintage for 2016 Silver Eagle Proof and UNC is? They were not offered for sale until late in the year due to the incused lettering and I think they stopped making them in order to start on 2017. Since the 2016 is still on sale they might be great investments if the mintage was really low due to the incused lettering causing production difficulties.

Rodney Moore, in regards to your question, Does anyone know what the 2016 silver eagle mintages were for the Proof and Uncirculated? I can’t find it anywhere and presumably they don’t strike any with the 2016 date after the year has passed? Read in the Coin News article above in paragraph 4 as it states, the Mint’s most popular products for the week that ended March 19, 2017 were: 2016-W Proof Silver Eagles (+4,450 were sold bringing the total of 550,054) & 2016-W Uncirculated Silver Eagles (+3,449 were sold bringing the total to 187,364). I’ve read that for either coin there wasn’t a set maximum mintage but I would think that at this point there should be a mintage published.
