Representing the eighth year of a series from the United States Mint, the 2017 ATB Quarters Silver Proof Set is now available. Released at noon (ET) today, Feb. 16, the set includes all five 2017-dated coins of the Mint’s America the Beautiful Quarters® program.

The outer packaging of 2017 America the Beautiful Quarters Silver Proof Set includes photographic images of the sites depicted by the coins within. To the left is a view of the front of the set’s packaging. To the right is a view of its back. The five coins are held in one protective lens, as shown in the center.

Increasing the set’s uniqueness (and price), its coins are struck from a composition of 90% silver and 10% copper. They are produced with a numismatic quality proof finish, featuring sharp reliefs, frosty designs, and mirror-like backgrounds. Their reverse designs honor parks and monuments in Iowa, the District of Columbia, Missouri, New Jersey and Indiana.

Included Coins and Silver Weight

All five coins appear together in one protective lens, with each produced at U.S. Mint’s facility in San Francisco and carrying an ‘S’ mint mark. An illustrated cardboard box protects the lens and depicts photographs of the sites honored by the coins within, which include:

  • 2017-S Effigy Mounds National Monument Quarter (Iowa)
  • 2017-S Frederick Douglass National Historic Site Quarter (Washington, DC)
  • 2017-S Ozark National Scenic Riverways Quarter (Missouri)
  • 2017-S Ellis Island (Statue of Liberty National Monument) Quarter (New Jersey)
  • 2017-S George Rogers Clark National Historical Park Quarter (Indiana)

Combined, they have a silver weight of 0.904 troy ounces. As an aside, the U.S. Mint can now strike coins in higher silver purity, like .999 fine, so 90% silver sets could soon become a thing of the past.

Additional specifications of each coin include a diameter of 0.955 inches, or 24.3 millimeters, and a weight of 6.250 grams.

Pricing and Sales Expectations

Earlier this year, on Jan. 5., the U.S. Mint released the clad version of the quarters proof set for $14.95. Its sales through Feb. 12 total 41,575. The silver set costs more at $31.95, but it will likely perform at a similar level and should eventuality reach sales of around 100,000.

Each coin is released in the order in which the honored site came under direct federal control. (See the 2017 quarter release dates.) The series is scheduled to conclude in 2021 with a total of fifty-six quarters with one representing a site from each state, the District of Columbia and the five U.S. territories.
