Gold Prices Rise Modestly, Silver Snaps 4-Session Losing Streak

Precious metals futures advanced Tuesday with gains ranging from 0.1% for gold to 2.4% for platinum

Precious metals advanced Tuesday. Gold ended higher for a second day in a row while silver posted its first increase in five sessions.

Gold for December delivery added $1.40, or 0.1%, to settle at $1,211.20 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange. Gold futures ranged from a low of $1,205.60 to a high of $1,220.90.

Gold has been "hit pretty hard in the last couple of weeks and…is stabilizing and base building just as [the U.S. dollar] has become exhausted and has started to level off," MarketWatch quoted Colin Cieszynski, chief market analyst at CMC Markets.

Gold prices inched up less than 0.1% on Monday for their first increase in four sessions. They closed at a nine-month low on Friday.

Silver for December delivery rose 11.1 cents, or 0.7%, to finish at $16.632 an ounce. Silver futures ranged from $16.52 to $16.89. In the previous session, they closed at their lowest level since June 7.

In other precious metals dealings:

  • January platinum gained $6.50, or 0.7%, to $943 an ounce, trading between $934.30 and $952.10.

  • Palladium for December delivery jumped $17.70, or 2.4%, to $744.25 an ounce, ranging from $726.25 to $748.90.

London Precious Metals Prices

In comparing earlier fixed London bullion prices from Monday PM to Tuesday PM:

  • Gold declined $2, or 0.2%, to $1,212.25 an ounce.
  • Silver added 8 cents, or 0.5%, to $16.76 an ounce.

LBMA platinum and palladium prices are available on the LBMA’s website with a delay of midnight.

US Mint Bullion Coin Sales in 2016

United States Mint bullion sales advanced on Tuesday by 7,500 ounces in American Eagle and Buffalo gold coins and by 6,000 ounces in America the Beautiful Five Ounce Silver Bullion Coins.
