On Tuesday, Sept. 27, the Royal Canadian Mint announced the release of a new silver coin to commemorate the 2016 Royal Tour of Canada by the Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and their children. The royal visit is taking place in British Columbia and the Yukon Territory until Oct. 1.
Limited to 10,000 pieces and struck in an ounce of 99.99% pure silver, the collector coin features a rendering of a family photograph of Prince William and Princess Kate with their children Prince George and Princess Charlotte.
"The Mint is proud of the many coins we have produced in honour of Canada’s Royal Family," said Sandra Hanington, President and CEO of the Royal Canadian Mint. "We look forward to commemorating other special Royal Family milestones on our coins in the years to come."
The reproduction of photographer Chris Jelf’s portrait is framed by an outer rim, which includes four engraved maple leaves to represent each member of the Royal Family. Surrounding reverse inscriptions include CANADA, 20 DOLLARS, and 2016.
Susanna Blunt’s effigy of the Queen Elizabeth II adorns the coin’s obverse or heads side. Obverse inscriptions include ELIZABETH II, D G REGINA and SG for the artist’s initials.
