Today, Aug. 18, the United States Mint began selling its limited-edition coin cover with two circulating-quality dollars commemorating Ronald Reagan, the 40th President of the United States.

Priced at $19.95, this product is the 39th and the last release in the American Presidency $1 Coin Cover Series. Its sales are restricted to 25,000 units which is 5,000 more than the previous two issues that also launched in 2016.

The two Reagan dollars are from the first day of production, making them unique and more desirable for coin collectors. Aside from past covers, no other U.S. Mint product has coins that the agency officially declares as first-day strikes. Reagan’s cover includes a dollar from the Philadelphia Mint, produced on Jan. 6, 2016, and a dollar from the Denver Mint, made on Dec. 6, 2015.

A hard display card protects both coins. Its front offers a portrait of the president and a postmark of SIMI VALLEY STATION, SIMI VALLEY, CA and AUG 18 2016. The Ronald Reagan Presidential Library, where the former president is buried, is in the city, and the date marks the day of the coin cover’s release. The backside of the card offers a brief description of President Reagan, the dollars, and the product itself.

Each display card arrives inside an envelope bearing a U.S. Red, White, and Blue Forever® postage stamp.

Designs on Reagan Presidential $1 Coins

On July 1, the United States Mint also released rolls, bags and boxes of 2016 Reagan Presidential dollars

Designed by Richard Masters and sculpted by Joseph Menna, dollar obverses or "heads side" show a likeness of the president surrounded by the inscriptions: RONALD REAGAN, IN GOD WE TRUST, 40th PRESIDENT and 1981-1989 for the years he served in the highest office.

Presidential $1 Coins all share the reverse or "tails side" design of Don Everhart’s rendition of the Statue of Liberty. Inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA and the face value, $1.

On the edges of these dollar coins one finds their year of issue, a ‘P’ or ‘D’ mint mark for the mint of origin, and E PLURIBUS UNUM.

Rhonda (Kay) Unser – Thanks for the updated information! These sets are fun to collect & in the coin & stamp hobbies are called “Philatelic Numismatic Covers (or combinations)” or PNCs. The covers are made by UniCover corporation of Cheyenne, Wyoming which has made first day issue stamp covers for decades now & puts these together for the Mint with the special USPS-approved official special postmark. Beautiful sets, but the coins are circulating quality only & all have numerous scratches since they are not given special treatment during production & mix together as they come off the high-speed coin presses… Read more »
