Mike Unser –

The American Liberty high relief silver medals will be Proof versions & the photos taken by journalists invited to the West Point Mint to view their production are available since June 15 as published by Coin World. They are beautiful !

Mike, I can’t thank you enough for your informative updates!!!

I really like the reverse on these American Liberty Medals. Now it would be nice if the Mint could just update the rest of the Product Schedule.

And here we are with the product schedule updated through August and still 8 TBDs. Who would buy a Congratulations set this late in the year? If the mint doesn’t want to sell the thing why don’t they just remove it from the list instead of waiting until nobody would want to buy it before putting it on the schedule? More evidence that the Senior Executive Service program has failed miserably when it comes to providing executives to the US Mint.

I have a granddaughter that graduated high school and I wanted to get her a 2016 coin. Well I thought the Congratulation Set would be the perfect coin. As we all know that did not happen. So I made my own Congratulation Set. One that was better than the Mint. I used two coins. The first was the 2016 PCGS MS70 Silver Eagle and the second was what made this custom set over the top. The 2016 $10 GOLD EAGLE PCGS MS70. Both with the FIRST STRIKE label. She loved it! It was hard to give away my Gold Eagle… Read more »

Now that is a great graduation gift! The Mint said its 30th anniversary silver American Eagle coins in Proof & Burnished Uncirculated would be issued this Summer. Well they issued their August schedule the other day & they are not on the list. They have had 7 months to prepare since they found out they had to add special edge lettering to all the ASE $1 coins except the bullion versions this year.

FYI CoinNews rreaders –

Last month, the West Point Mint invited journalists to view the striking of the new 2016 American Liberty high relief silver medals which are Proofs. CoinWorld.com published the photos they took at the Mint on June 15 online. You don’t have to wait to see them. They are beautiful!
Is anyone going to purchase these 2 high relief 1-oz. .999 fine silver medals with “W” & “S” Mint marks?

@Seth Riesling I also saw that Coinworld article and photos of the medals. And won’t be buying them … I had some interest at the beginning when the Mint made such a hoopla about a UHR gold in 2015 but then they switched it to an HR (without fanfare, I think) and then they decided it would be in unc finish …I think folks (like myself) had been hoping for a proof finish . so I decided to wait for the 2015 silver medal version which the Mint said was coming …. and that was pulled by the Mint from… Read more »

Tinto – I understand your concerns for sure. The Mint really backtracked on these silver medals last year & messed things up again! But since one of my specialties is medallic art in bronze & silver (only designs I really like of course) & since these are high relief Proofs, I will be purchasing just one of each Mint mark to add to my collection. I too have decreased my purchases from the US Mint drastically this year & going forward as I enjoy the much better products & customer service of the RCM & Perth Mint Australia. Happy collecting!… Read more »

Joera – I give the proof silver eagle for congratulations myself. Unfortunately even that coin is TBD on the mint’s product schedule. At least it doesn’t say congratulations so as late as they are with that coin it will still serve in later years as a good reminder of whatever celebratory event took place in 2016. The membership of the Senior Executive Service seems to be exceptionally closed mouth about their faux pas’ vis-à-vis the US Mint. I think it’s a matter of embarrassment that they have demonstrated incompetency (both Peterson and Jeppson) with respect to the Deputy Directorship of… Read more »

The proof silver American Eagle will be made only after the demand is met for the bullion version. That is why none were made in 2009.

@Seth Riesling Collecting medals is neat too.. I dabbled a little bit when I tried to collect some of the Swiss shooting medals issued in the late 1800’s …. unfortunately i had to stop after only a few medals but I bought them for their beauty and I enjoy looking at them. I also have 2 or 3 UK coronation medals one is a very worn silver medal of Queen Anne and another ultra high relief silver one of Queen Victoria and a silvered high relief medal of King William … plus a Dutch copy (according to PCGS) of the… Read more »

Tinto – The world of medallic art is fascinating for sure, but there are too few reference books about them – especially when it comes to values. Most dealers concentrate on coins & know very little about medallic art. If you have to sell, it is best IMHO to seek out large established auction houses like Heritage or Stack’s Bowers who have the experience of selling such historic pieces. The Swiss Shooting Thalers are a beautiful series that are still being struck in Switzerland each year. Nothing like them anywhere as they are good for 50 francs during the festival… Read more »

Carl S. –
It’s a shame that after selling over 27 million bullion eagles the mint can’t scrape together the roughly 850.000 that would be used to sell as proof coins to collectors even this late in the game.

Tinto

@jim The 2009 fiasco when the Mint could not bring themselves to mint proof ASEs was the beginning of my skepticism on the way the Mint “operates” I don’t buy their so lame and ready made excuse … I don’t collect proof ASE’s but I think of the hole that will be there forever in proof ASE collections and I thank my lucky stars I was not hooked on them. And now almost 7 months have passed and the 30th anniversary proof and unc (not bullion) ASE of 2016 (along with products that feed of it like the Congratulations Set,… Read more »

I don’t mind the hole in the silver eagle collection, it’s a hole in everybody’s collection and not caused by a release timing issue or over excessive dealer/flipper purchases. They did release a proof silver eagle in mid November 2010 so I still have hope a 30th anniversary coin. But I expect as with the Mercury Dime the standing and walking liberty gold coins will have a very limited release window if at all. And no 10th anniversary gold buffalo or 30th anniversary gold coin set either. Will there be a 20th anniversary platinum eagle set in 2017? Probably not… Read more »
