A unique 2016 Native American $1 Coin from the San Francisco Mint and a Series 2013 $1 note from one of the 12 Federal Reserve Banks make their debut today, June 16, at noon ET.

The $1 coin has an enhanced uncirculated finish and the $1 bill features a low serial number. Both are paired together in a joint United States Mint and Bureau of Engraving and Printing product called the 2016 American $1 Coin and Currency Set. Both are exclusive to the set.

Priced at $14.95 with a product limit of 75,000 and an ordering limit of 5 per household, they are expected to sell out.

This year’s release is third in an annual series, with the other two no longer available. They are popular with collectors because of their affordable pricing and exclusive coins. The U.S. Mint sells Native American dollars in other products but those coins are in different finishes and available in higher quantities. The set from 2015 has an enhanced uncirculated dollar from the West Point Mint and the set from 2014 has an enhanced uncirculated dollar from the Denver Mint.

Reverse (tails) designs on Native American $1 Coins change annually. Created by Thomas D. Rogers, Sr. and sculpted by U.S. Mint Medallic Sculptor Renata Gordon, this year’s design shows two helmets with the inscriptions "WWI" and "WWII" and two feathers that form a “V,” symbolizing victory, unity, and the important role that code talkers played in both world wars. Additional inscriptions include "UNITED STATES OF AMERICA," "$1" and "CODE TALKERS."

The $1 coin’s obverse (heads) retains sculptor Glenna Goodacre’s design of Sacagawea and her baby. The image first appeared on Sacagawea dollars in 2000.

Ordering

When released, order 2016 American $1 Coin and Currency Sets from the U.S. Mint’s online product page found here. Place phone orders using 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

The coin and banknote are housed in a tri-fold presentation folder containing historical information about the code talkers.

Update: First-day sales of the set reached 21,149 units, according to the United States Mint.

I love the design on this coin and currency set…however, I do wish the U. S. Mint would do a 1 oz, solid 24k gold Native American Indian, with this same enhanced finish! To add to this, make it a Very low mintage , for all of us collectors here in the states. Now that would be one Great unique coin!

Buford –

When the Sacagawea $1 coin made its debut back in 2000, the US Mint struck 12 coins in gold & got NASA to send them into space aboard the space shuttle as a publicity stunt! Those 12 gold Sacagawea coins have been in a vault at Ft. Knox gathering dust ever since. The Mint broke the law by striking them in gold, but as usual nothing was done about that.

Trying to figure out what their definition of a low serial number might be.
Scalpers with insider federal reserve connections always seem to have the inside track to anything really low that is ever produced by BEP.

Seth Riesling

Got my order in at 12:05 Eastern Time for 5 sets. Can’t wait to see what low serial #s I get on the $1 FRNs!

Quickest order confirmation to date! If it took 1 minute it would be pushing it. Perhaps interest is waning…or people asleep?

Tinto

I like the design too. In 2018 they will have Jim Thorpe on the reverse. I hope the Mint chooses the CFA’s recommended design over the CCAC’s.

Tinto

Got my order in around 12:03 with no hassles either …

Mike in Anaheim

Ordered 3 right at 9:00. No hassle, didn’t get kicked out. A huge improvement from past experiences with the mint site.

Seth Riesling

I was shocked at how fast & easy I got my order placed too ! I got a confirmation email 1 minute after & a order summary email 22 minutes later. Amazing!
I wonder how low the serial #s on the banknotes will be? 1 or 2 digits after all zeros notes can bring really good money from paper money collectors & dealers.

Mike in Anaheim –

I bet you can’t wait for the 5-day ANA coin show & convention in August in your backyard in Anaheim. The largest annual coin show in the world!

Boz

We are guessing what the mint considers low serial numbers will still have plenty of digits in them.. But a 777777777 would be nice.

Seth Riesling

Boz –

Lucky 7s would be nice for sure! The notes all have 8 digits, so I am hoping for 6 or 7 zeros in front of a low number.

Put my order in at 12:02, no waiting. Got my annual mint/proof/silver proof sets too so avoided paying postage twice. Either interest is waning or they’re getting more efficient over there. Good to see. Now if they’d just release those gold Mercs….

Seth Riesling

Just got an email that my order has shipped! I ordered 5 of these sets plus 5 other items I had on my shopping list & paid for expedited next day shipping by UPS by 10:30am with signature required. Can’t wait to see them in the morning!
Amazing fast service on this order by US Mint.

Christopher Williams

i picked up four sets today.

I didn’t order until approximately 3PM while on my lunch break.

Seth Riesling

Christopher Williams –

Glad you got your sets. It will be interesting to see what the first day sales figures are. This set like past two years are beautiful presentation sets for collectors & to give as gifts. Kudos to the US Mint on a great set at a very fair price!

Christopher Williams

Thank you, Seth.

I look forward to adding it to my 2014 and 2015 sets.

By the way, Sunday night is Mike “Sold Out, Limited Edition” night.

Christopher Williams –

Thanks for the reminder about Mezack! I will microwave my popcorn & watch the master of deception on HSN Coin Collector show.

Just received my 5 sets by UPS overnight 45 minutes ago & finished viewing them. Nice condition on all 5 coins. The Series 2013 $1 FRNs are all from the Federal Reserve Bank of Atlanta (F) and I got 4 sets with consecutive serial numbers. My 5 notes all start with three zeros and end in: 13054, 13055, 13056, 13057 & 13073.
Very nice sets for sure!

Happy collecting everyone!

Nice day to take off today from work (actually a Vacation Day).

I just received a Confirmation email that mine have been shipped also.

Christopher Williams

I know I’m being repetitive, but Mike deserves a big “Thank you” for his informative threads.

Thank you, Mike.

Tinto

My order of the NA sets have also shipped, according the Mint’s email of 6:01pm today. Hopefully I get my hands on them by the end of next week fingers crossed.
The Mint should have reduced the mintage to 60k, or even 50k … with the 75k it looks like it’s gonna take a while .. but at least I got mine without hassles!

Seth Riesling

Tinto –

Glad your sets shipped quickly too. Please let us know the condition of the ones you get & what low serial numbers you get on your banknotes. Thanks!

-NumisDudeTX

Christopher Williams

I received my one set today (my other three sets are right behind it) and opened it up, and as a collector, and for the price, you have to love these sets.

Seth Riesling

Christopher Williams-

They sure are great sets! What low serial # banknote did you get?

-NumisDudeTX

Christopher Williams

Seth,

My first set is “00011462A.”

Christopher

may

serial# 00004199A , is that low??

Seth Riesling

Christopher Williams & May –

Thanks for sharing info ! It looks like they are fairly random #s so far. My 5 were in the early 13000 range & Mike Unser’s note he had a photo of on this website was in the higher 13000 range.

May –

Your note is the lowest I have heard of so far.

Happy collecting everyone!

-NumisDudeTX

joera

I have bought the other two sets in OGP and then only the coin graded by PCGS. If this year’s set does have a “real” low number $1 note I might also buy the $1 note graded. I really don’t collect paper money but I do have some Silver Certificates that are uncirculated and circulated but none that are graded. My wife says I already have too many hobbies and she hopes I don’t really get into collecting paper money. lol

Seth Riesling

joera –

It is an addicting hobby for sure!

Happy collecting!

-NumisDudeTX

TJ

Just received my two sets. 12607 and 12608 respectively. Happy collecting.

TJ

Correction. 12507 and 12508.

Shiny

The reverse design looks the same as the proof – not like the reverse proof vibe the past few years had. Mint missed the mark on this ‘enhanced’ design.

btw – My serial #s were in mid 13000’s in the H (St Louis) bank series.

Seth Riesling

TJ –

Thanks for sharing info. Glad you got 2 consecutively numbered notes.
