Prices on Mark Twain Gold Coins will climb by $5 today and likely move up another $12.50 on Wednesday

For the second time this month and the third time this year, the United States Mint is poised to raise prices on its collectible gold coins. The agency is also about to set up pricing for the upcoming 2016 $10 Patricia Nixon First Spouse Gold Coins. They go on sale Thursday, Feb. 18, at noon Eastern Time.

The U.S. Mint’s newest gold pieces, the commemorative Mark Twain $5 coins, will undergo one or possibly two increases. They include the automatic one today at 3 p.m. when their introductory pricing period ends and regular prices take effect, and then the potential one on Wednesday in response to the precious metals market.

U.S. Mint policy is to set collector gold coin prices based on a weekly average of London gold. Last Wednesday, Feb. 10, the Mint raised gold coin prices when that average swelled to within the range of $1,150.00 to $1,199.99 an ounce. Gold has moved higher since. It pared some gains since scoring its best week in more than 7 years on Friday, but the yellow metal remains firmly within a higher tier, trading atop $1,200 an ounce.

If Wednesday’s LBMA gold price for the PM stays above that level, expect the following adjustments across the Mint’s gold products:

From To
2016-W $5 Mark Twain Gold Proof Coin $388.30* $405.45
2016-W $5 Mark Twain Gold Uncirculated Coin $383.30* $400.45
2015-W $100 American Liberty High Relief Gold Coin** $1,590.00 $1,640.00
2015-W Proof Gold Buffalo Coin (1 oz)** $1,540.00 $1,590.00
2015-W Uncirculated Gold Eagle Coin (1 oz)** $1,475.00 $1,525.00
2015-W Proof Gold Eagle Coin (1 oz)** $1,510.00 $1,560.00
2015-W Proof Gold Eagle Coin (1/2 oz)** $770.00 $795.00
2015-W Proof Gold Eagle Coin (1/4 oz)** $397.50 $410.00
2015-W Proof Gold Eagle Coin (1/10 oz)** $170.00 $175.00
2014, 2015 & 2016 First Spouse Gold Proof Coins $790.00 $815.00
2014, 2015 & 2016 First Spouse Gold Uncirculated Coins $770.00 $795.00

*Mark Twain Gold Coins are in their introductory sales period, with their prices in the "From" column above so reflecting. Their regular pricing takes effect on Tuesday, Feb. 16, at 3 p.m. ET when each coin automatically climbs by $5 to $393.30 for the proof and $388.30 for the uncirculated.

Products with two asterisks (**) are currently unavailable.

The United States Mint made fourteen pricing adjustments last year, raising them six times and dropping them eight times. The first for this year happened on the week ended Jan. 27 when coin prices were raised. A second increase occurred last week on Feb. 10. Past adjustments have tended to happen on Wednesdays at around 2:00 p.m. ET. This article will get updated with what actually happens.

Update: The U.S. Mint increased gold coin prices. New pricing started to go live at about 2:14 p.m. ET on Wednesday.

The above gold coins are found on the U.S. Mint’s website page located here.

Glad I bought when it went on sale.

Hindsight 20/20. I wish had purchased it then. Instead, I waited to silver Twains to come out.

Duh, what is there to buy in gold or silver from the US Mint. Nothing that hasn’t been on sale too long already. Pat should still be available 3 years from now so will wait for gold to go back down.

Big excitement will be late in the year for the 100 year anniversary designs in gold. Hope pm value plummets by then.
