Precious metals ended mixed

Gold futures on Thursday ended lower for a third session in a row while silver snapped a three-session winning streak.

Gold for December delivery fell $4.60, or 0.4%, to settle at $1,088.70 an ounce on the Comex division of the New York Mercantile Exchange.

"The bears remain confident, what with a lack of bullish fundamental inputs, a rebound in the U.S. dollar index this week, and a very bearish technical posture for the precious metal," Jim Wyckoff, a senior analyst at Kitco Metals Inc., said in a report.

Gold prices ranged from a low of $1,081.50 to a high of $1,098.20. Even with the losing streak, gold is up about 0.3% since Friday.

Silver for September delivery shed 5 cents, or 0.3%, to $14.70 an ounce. Silver prices traded between $14.58 and $14.82.

In other precious metals futures on Thursday:

  • October platinum gained $5, or 0.5%, to $989.90 an ounce, ranging from $978.70 to $994.40.

  • Palladium for September delivery climbed $4.95, or 0.8%, to $620.55 an ounce, trading between $616 and $624.35.
