Available in two collector finishes, proof and uncirculated, the gold pieces feature designs emblematic of Jacqueline, the wife of John F. Kennedy who was the 35th President of the United States.

The series of First Spouse Gold Coins was introduced in 2009. They honor spouses of former U.S. Presidents, in the order in which they served. Those that are being issued in 2015 include:

  • 2015 Bess Truman First Spouse Gold Coins (released on April 16)
  • 2015 Mamie Eisenhower First Spouse Gold Coins (released on May 7)
  • 2015 Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse Gold Coins (this issue)
  • 2015 Claudia Taylor "Lady Bird" Johnson First Spouse Gold Coins (estimated release in August)

These issues represent the thirty-fifth through thirty-ninth in the series.

Designs of Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse Gold Coins

On the Jacqueline Kennedy gold pieces, two designs won out of thirteen candidate designs that consisted of eight obverse (heads side) portraits and five reverse (tails side) scenes based on her life. Reviewing parties for the artwork included the Citizen’s Coinage Advisory Committee and the United States Commission of Fine Arts. Their input, and that of U.S. Mint officials, effected the Treasury Secretary’s final selections.

Designed by Susan Gamble and sculpted by Phebe Hemphill, the obverse offers a forward-looking portrait of the former First Lady. Her image is surrounded by inscriptions of "JACQUELINE KENNEDY," "IN GOD WE TRUST," "LIBERTY," "2015," "W," "35th" and "1961 – 1963."

Ordering, Prices and Limits

2015-W $10 Jacqueline Kennedy First Spouse Gold Coins are available directly from the United States Mint’s online store via this link. Phone orders are accepted at 1-800-USA-MINT (872-6468).

Currently, the proof coin is $790 and the uncirculated coin is $770. These prices are subject to change weekly, as the U.S. Mint re-evaluates gold coin pricing based on market fluctuations. The two coins are limited to a combined mintage maximum of 30,000 and the ratio of proof to uncirculated will be determined by actual orders.

Expecting demand to be strong, the mintage level is 20,000 higher than other recent issues. There are no household ordering limits, meaning buyers can order as many as they like.

A certificate of authenticity is included with each coin, as it ships encapsulated inside a custom designed, highly polished, dome-chested, lacquered hardwood presentation case. All First Spouse Gold Coins are struck at the U.S. Mint’s facility in West Point and carry the corresponding ‘W’ mint mark.

Jacqueline Kennedy Bronze Medals

Bronze medal replicas of First Spouse Gold Coins are also produced by the United States Mint. Jacqueline Kennedy bronze medals will be featured in two releases later this year.

This includes the Kennedy Presidential $1 and First Spouse Medal Set that is due to release in July for $9.95. It will be followed in September with the 2015 First Spouse Medal Set that will feature bronze medal replicas of the four first ladies honored this year. The price for this set has not been announced.

Wow, 90 minutes in to the ordering period and I get backordered. Either sales were high or they didn’t make many.

Kyle

They were listed as on Back Order when they went on sale at noon.

Placed my order for the proof gold coin at 12:05 it is back order until september 1/15.But worth the wait it complements my gold proof JFK coin.Congrats to the USmint for another beautiful gold coin.

David

Kyle, thanks for telling me that. They must be running behind in production of this one. Will be interesting to see initial sales.

Tinto

I had it in my Wish List at the Mint and the proof was shown as Backordered even before the 12 noon EST start of sale ……..

Doug

Logged in at 12 noon Proof was on back order til 9-1-15. UNC. said available so I ordered 1 UNC. and 1 Proof. Later in the day UNC. are back ordered til 8-31-15. Looks like the mint made very little of these if any at all. Curious to see when I get the UNC. Why advertise/sell if they are not available??? OH YEAH WE ARE DEALING WITH THE U.S. MINT!!!!!!!!!!! Maybe the mint is trying to produce to sales generated. NOT A GOOD BUSINESS PRACTICE!!!!!!!!!

Boz

I am having trouble figuring out the FS sales charts on the post below. Coins still active on the mint shopping website show no sales at all while others that are no longer offered are showing sales? Wats up with that?

Boz

Ida McKinley that is no longer available sold 81 proofs while Helen Taft who is still on the web site did not sell any? Go figure!

Annie

Another bullion value issue. I pass it.

David

Boz,
The sales numbers have been strange for some time now. Big adjustments up and down makes me wonder who is typing in the numbers. Now they are selling items they haven’t even made yet. At least they don’t bill you until they ship.

Mike Unser (CoinNews.net)

As an FYI, first-day sales of the coins totaled 7,102 for the proof and 3,792 for the uncirculated. I’ve inquired about the proof’s ‘Back Order’ status.

Tinto

I have the Truman C&C on my Mint Wishlist, it’s showing Backorder though it hasn’t even gone on sale yet.

I also had the Unc and Proof Jackie on my wishlist and before the noon start of sales yesterday the Unc was available whereas the Proof showed backorder. Something is not right at the Mint ….

Cliff

I was looking to get a few proofs and send for grading as First Strikes. I refreshed my screen at exactly twelve noon and have super fast internet at 20 MPS upload and 200 MPS download. The screen refresh immediately and coin was listed as backordered. At most probably five seconds. So those with the notice on wish list are correct. The proof coins were never offered to the public except as backorders. Dealers got them all. Mint should have had a household limit and should go back and cancel all orders and start over on the proofs. Dealer prices… Read more »

Does this mean that no Early Release or First Strikes will be available from the Grading Services since the ship dates will all be outside the 30 day window?

If dealers have these available then we should cry foul US Mint!

I had this experience a few years ago on 5oz beautiful america series. The first four of the year were sold out much more slowly than the last one which is just in a few days.
