Gene, actually going back a week the numbers for that product jumped by the same amount, so they are just correcting a data entry mistake.

The Native American 2014 250 coin boxes are sold out. This means a 1529 box ($382,250) discrepancy in inventory just disappeared?

I think its obvious that the mint doesn’t know what’s going on sometimes. It would seem like they should hirer a few old time coin collectors that are slightly OCD about numbers to get a better handle on things. Sometimes the rapid sell outs and the plain wrong choice in production amounts just make no sense at all. Its like the upcoming Chronicle set with a mintage of only 17,000 but with a reverse proof dollar in it. I bet most collectors would recommend a mintage of 50,000 instead. But they will have a rapid sell out and then those collectors shut out will not want to but the other 3 later this year.
Going back to the lower numbers, I bet they only balance the books on returns manually and they are doing it now to get ready to close out the products.

Thats a LOT of spouse coin returns. 6-8 weeks worth of sales for some. I’m thinking that would have to be dealers or resellers ditching inventory before the Kennedy coin comes out in a couple weeks. Seriously doubt 5% of Edith Wilson proof collectors decided (and were eligible) to return coins all on the same week and the sales of all those were strong ~8 weeks ago. What’s the time frame on the Mint’s return policy?? OK, I looked. 7 days! Hows that work, they didn’t sell 129 Edith Wilson proofs in the past 7 WEEKS. Your bookkeeping clean up might be right. Does that get filed under, “here’s a few hundred 1/2 oz gold coins that thought we sold, but apparently didn’t”???

I was wondering if the large number of negative sales numbers say in the First Spouse coins due to some type of inventory that takes place at a given time of year? Or are they inventorying due to many of the First Spouse coins approaching sell-outs? Both Ida McKinley (-9) and Edith Roosevelt (-48) uncirculated are both no longer listed on the Mint’s webpage for sale. With a (-48) for Roosevelt if those were return coins will they be relisting. Or was it just the Mint trying to clean up their reported sales numbers due to the approaching sell-out of many of the First Spouse Gold Coins?

So when the sales go down is that due to returns? Do many people buy more than they want, cherry pick what they receive and then return the rest? I try to order early to avoid getting returned merchandise, but should I be cherry picking also?
