2014-W Proof American Platinum Eagle Coins for collectors are now available. They may be ordered directly from the United States Mint at catalog.usmint.gov for $1,600. Thanks to falling precious metals, the price is $200 less than when last year’s coin debuted.
Platinum Eagles are composed of one ounce of 99.95% fine platinum. Mintage for this year’s proof coin is limited to 15,000 with demand setting whether that amount actually gets struck.
Its release marks the last in the six-coin Preamble Series. The core principles in the preamble of the U. S. Constitution serve as the basis for the series and were inspired by narratives prepared by the Chief Justice of the United States, John G. Roberts. The first five principles celebrated in coin designs include:
2014 Proof Platinum Eagle Designs & Specifications
Struck at the West Point Mint after testing new finishes, the reverse or tails side of the 2014-W Proof American Platinum Eagle Coin is a design commemorating the concept "To Secure the Blessings of Liberty to Ourselves and our Posterity." The image offers a young Lady Liberty carrying her torch, symbolizing the hope and promise of America.
U.S. Mint Artistic Infusion Program Master Designer Susan Gamble crafted the design with sculpting completed by U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver Joseph Menna. It was chosen from several design candidates unveiled to the public last year.
The reverse also includes an American Eagle privy mark from an original coin punch identified at the United States Mint at Philadelphia. Reverse inscriptions include UNITED STATES OF AMERICA, 1 oz., .9995 PLATINUM, and $100.
A modern interpretation of the Statue of Liberty is seen on the obverse. The image was designed and sculpted by former U.S. Mint Sculptor-Engraver John Mercanti and has appeared on proof Platinum Eagles since their 1997 debut. Obverse inscriptions include LIBERTY, IN GOD WE TRUST and 2014.
