2014 Superman Coins Depict Timeless DC Comics’ Covers

Four new coins from the Royal Canadian Mint celebrate iconic Superman comic book covers that have been issued through DC Comics’ seventy-five year history with the fictional hero.

Three of the Superman coins are featured in 99.99% pure silver and the other one is struck in 14-karat gold. All four coins offer reverse designs in color.

"Superman’s legend continues with these expertly crafted coins produced in stunning color by Mint employees," said Mr. Patrick Hadsipantelis, Vice-President of Marketing and Communications at the Royal Canadian Mint. "The use of different finishes and engraving techniques bring the world’s most famous Super Hero to life."

Superman, created by writer Jerry Siegel and artist Joe Shuster, was introduced to the public in the 1930’s. Since then, the ‘Man of Steel’ has become a staple of popular culture, appearing around the world in publications, television programs and motion pictures.

2014 $100 Superman 14-Karat Gold Proof Coin – Adventures of Superman #596 from 2001

The reverse of this 14 karat gold coin offers an action image of Clark Kent, Superman’s secret identity. Clark is seen peeling off his shirt, revealing the S-shield emblem that is synonymous with Superman. This image was taken from The Adventures of Superman #596 which debuted on September 12, 2001.

Mintage for the proof gold coin is limited to 2,000. Pricing is CAD $750.95, or about US $690. Each ships with a serialized certificate and a custom graphic display case. There is a household ordering limit of one is in place.

2014 $20 Superman 1 Oz Silver Proof Coin – Superman Annual #1 from 2012

A full color image of Superman appears on the reverse of this one-ounce silver proof coin. It shows the hero as he appeared on the cover of Superman Annual #1, released in 2012.

Mintage is capped at 10,000 with each appearing in a premium graphic display case. Pricing is CAD $109.95, or about US $101. This coin has a household order limit of three.

2014 $15 Superman Silver Proof Coin – Action Comics #419 from 1972

On this one-ounce silver proof coin, Superman takes flight, with his fists clenched and his determined grin showing. He appears in his classic blue costume with yellow and red S-shield. The image was taken from Action Comics #419 which hit store shelves in 1972.

Only three of these coins may be ordered per household. Pricing is CAD $89.95, or about US $82.65. Maximum mintage is 10,000. A serialized certificate and a graphic display case accompany each purchase.

2014 $10 Superman 1/2 Oz Silver Proof Coin – Action Comics #1 from 1938

Acknowledging the importance of the introduction of Superman in 1938, the reverse of this one-half ounce silver proof coin has a design taken from Action Comics #1 of that same year. The design shows Superman hoisting a green car high above his head and smashing the front of it against a rock, thereby foiling an attempted abduction of Lois Lane.

Priced at $69.95, or about US $64.30, mintage of this coin is limited to 10,000 with a household ordering limit of three in place. Each ships in a custom presentation case along with a serialized certificate.

Most no longer available, Superman coins had been sold from the Royal Canadian Mint website at mint.ca and through Mint stores.
