The Poseidon coin appears as the second issue in the Perth Mint’s Gods of Olympus series. Maximum mintage is only 1,500, aiding in an expected sell-out.

"In ancient Greek mythology, Poseidon was worshiped as the God of the Sea," describes the Perth Mint in a release. "Adept at gathering clouds and creating violent storms, Poseidon was responsible for countless shipwrecks and the drowning of many souls, yet he also held the power to grant a ship a successful voyage, and to save those in danger."

That prediction of a quick sell-out is supported by the first program issue, featuring Zeus, which sold out within hours of release. The series is scheduled to end later this year with a third coin depicting Hades.

Poseidon Coin Designs and Specifications

Perth Mint artist Tom Vaughan created the design found on the reverse of the 2014 Poseidon High Relief 2 oz Silver Coin. It depicts a bearded Poseidon holding his trident while riding the waves on his chariot. The chariot is pulled by two hippocampi and dolphins can be seen in the background.

Adding to the high relief design, POSEIDON is inscribed below. As mentioned, the image is rimless and featured in an antique finish.

The obverse offers Ian Rank-Broadley’s effigy of Queen Elizabeth II. Inscriptions include QUEEN ELIZABETH II, 2 oz 999 SILVER, 2014, 2 DOLLARS and TUVALU. These last inscriptions indicate that the coin is struck as legal tender of the island nation of Tuvalu with a face value of 2 dollars.

I bought 3 Zeus. Beautiful pieces, But imo I think it needed the capsules..

Jack

Agreed that they needed capsules. Even folks that aren’t into coins were taken back by my Zeus coin. Of course non-collectors don’t know how to handle them properly and you almost hate to let them touch it. A capsule would be great

The Perth Mint $2 Tuvalu high relief 2 troy oz. pure silver coins for the 2014 three Gods of Olympus (Zeus, Poseidon & Hades) as well as the 2015 three Goddesses of Olympus (Hera, Athena & Aphrodite) do not come in coin capsules. Watch the Perth Mint video on YouTube @ https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Lv5p6pVXgBQ . Towards the end of the video @ 1:11, you can see a clear coat being sprayed onto the coins to protect their antique finish. Since these coins are rimless, there is no rim to
stop to a coin capsule from touching their high relief design.
