That could be a big find with less than 5,000 units sold except that 280,000+ coins were in the 2 coin set. It definitely is a cheaper way to get the single coin, though.

The “sell out” shouldn’t be unexpected – lately the mint hasn’t gone much over 800,000 in a year, So if you’re following this weekly report you can easily anticipate when sales will be halted. Or it may be a time limit – they need some time to start minting the 2014 silver eagles. Either way with sales starting end of January, plenty of time to buy what one wants before sales stop. I use the subscription method to get my silver eagles.

I myself support the idea that coins minted in a particular year should only be sold that year. That requires some forethought and planning and it’s not clear that the US Mint personnel have that capability but front loading the schedule and above all providing an end date for sales of a product would help significantly in my opinion.
