US Mint Sales: 2013 Proof Sets Top 600,000

5
Coins in 2013 Proof Set
Weekly sales of the 2013 Proof Set jumped by more than 18,000 to land above 600,000

Orders continue to flow quicker for many United States Mint core products like proof sets, uncirculated sets, commemorative coins and proof American Gold Eagles.

Gains came atop already brisk increases with last week’s U.S. Mint sales report showing 145 of 202 numismatic products scoring stronger numbers. Despite that, this week’s sales report still had 80 over-performers.

At or near the top of the Mint best sellers list every week is the annual 14-coin Proof Set with clad strikes of all American coinage for the year. This year’s Proof Set just leapt over the 600,000 milestone, logging in with unit sales of 612,748 since released on March 28, 2013.

Collectors may recall that last year’s 2012 Proof Set surprisingly sold out in the first week of January with sales of 794,002 — the lowest total since the set from 1956. It had reached 591,014 by this time last year, though it also launched about five weeks later into the year compared to this year’s set. It was priced by the U.S. Mint at $31.95, the same as this year’s issue, but it is now enjoying secondary market values ranging from $83.99 to $109.95, according to realized auctions over the past month on eBay.com.

On topic, the 2013 Proof Set was the strongest weekly seller for the Mint.

re: “last year’s 2012 Proof Set surprisingly sold out in the first week of January”
I myself support the idea that coins minted in a particular year should only be sold that year. That requires some forethought and planning and it’s not clear that the US Mint personnel have that capability but front loading the schedule and above all providing an end date for sales of a product would help significantly in my opinion.

2013 American Eagle One Ounce Silver Proof Coin (GA6)

Sold Out.

Unexpected. Although you can still get the 2013 AE Proof from the Congratulation set – (N17).

jim

The “sell out” shouldn’t be unexpected – lately the mint hasn’t gone much over 800,000 in a year, So if you’re following this weekly report you can easily anticipate when sales will be halted. Or it may be a time limit – they need some time to start minting the 2014 silver eagles. Either way with sales starting end of January, plenty of time to buy what one wants before sales stop. I use the subscription method to get my silver eagles.

dale

got my congratulation 2013 today looks like the reverse proof eagle very surprised….

jim

That could be a big find with less than 5,000 units sold except that 280,000+ coins were in the 2 coin set. It definitely is a cheaper way to get the single coin, though.
