Background

Featured on the reverse (tails side) of the 2013 Mount Rushmore National Memorial quarter is Joseph Menna’s design of the national site as it would have appeared prior to its completion. Inspired by photos of men who added the final details to Thomas Jefferson’s face, Menna’s design offers a unique and educational perspective on how Mount Rushmore was created and sculpted.

2006 was the last time Mount Rushmore was depicted on a quarter. This 40th coin in the United States Mint’s 50 State Quarters® Program featured John Mercanti’s scene showing South Dakota’s State bird, the Chinese ring-necked pheasant; Mount Rushmore National Memorial; and a pair of Wheat Heads.
